WOODLEY F. “WOODY” ABELL II, AGE 83 OF McARTHUR ST. MOUNT VERNON, DIED MARCH 14, 2002, AT THE KNOX COMMUNITY HOSPITAL. HE WAS BORN NOVEMBER 3, 1918, IN WASHINGTON DC, THE SON OF THE LATE WOODLEY F. AND SARAH (RUSSELL) ABELL AND HAD BEEN A MOUNT VERNON RESIDENT FOR 45 YEARS. HE WAS A RETIRED DRAFTSMAN AND HAD BEEN EMPLOYED BY THE COOPER BESSEMER CORP. FOR 18 YEARS AND RETIRED FROM THE FLEXIBLE CO. IN LOUDONVILLE. HE WAS A WW II VETERAN AND SERVED WITH THE US MARINE CORPS IN THE SOUTH PACIFIC. HE SERVED WITH THE FIRST AND THIRD MARINE DIVISIONS AND SAW ACTION IN THE SOLOMON ISLANDS, AND ON GUADALCANAL. HE WAS A MEMBER OF THE ST. VINCENT dePAUL CATHOLIC CHURCH.

HE IS SURVIVED BY HIS WIFE OF 55 YEARS AGNES (FITZPATRICK) ABELL, 4 SONS MARK (HILARY) ABELL OF JACKSON, WOODLEY (LEA) ABELL III OF JACKSONVILLE, FL., MICHAEL (LAURA) ABELL AND THOMAS ABELL BOTH OF MOUNT VERNON, 4 GRANDDAUGHTERS CARA ABELL, SARAH ABELL, LORIANN ABELL AND ASHLYNN ABELL, 7 GRANDSONS BRIAN ABELL, CHRISTOPHER (JEANELL) ABELL, LEVI (SAMANTHA) ABELL, DREW ABELL, JASON ABELL, DYLAN SCOTT AND ETHAN ABELL AND A GREAT GRANDSON MORGAN ABELL. HE WAS PRECEDED IN DEATH BY 3 SISTERS SALLY WILSON, MARGARET FINZELL AND LUCY WHITT.

FRIENDS MAY CALL AT THE FLOWERS-SNYDER FUNERAL HOME ON SUNDAY FROM 1 PM UNTIL 4 PM. A FUNERAL MASS WILL BE HELD ON MONDAY AT 10 AM AT THE ST. VINCENT dePAUL CATHOLIC CHURCH AND BURIAL, WITH MILITARY HONORS OBSERVED BY THE KNOX COUNTY JOINT VETERANS COUNCIL, WILL FOLLOW AT THE MOUNT VERNON MEMORIAL GARDENS.
