William W. “Bill” Edwards Jr.

MANSFIELD: January 21, 2018: Now at home with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, William W. “Bill” Edwards Jr. passed peacefully, at age 96, from his earthly home at Elmcroft of Ontario Senior Living Community.

Bill was born at home in California, Ohio, on April 28, 1921, to William W. and Mary (Ferriel) Edwards. He was raised in Lima, and attended Lima Central School. Bill was the eldest of five children, two sisters, Donna and Helen and two brothers Carl and one (unnamed) died shortly after birth and step sister Deloris. He enlisted in the Marines after the Pearl Harbor attack. He was stationed in the Pacific in the Samoa Islands and many bases in the U.S. working in the Signal Corp.

He worked on telephones, running telephone lines, and worked the switching equipment. In 1946, Bill began working at the Lima Telephone Service Company in Lima where he was a Switching Equipment Installer. He later transferred to Wauseon, and worked as Wire Chief and later became the Area Manager. In 1968, Bill became a Telephone Equipment Engineer and transferred to Mansfield, to work for the United Telephone Company. He retired from United Telephone in 1983 after working for telephone companies for 37 years.

One of his favorite pass times was using his Ham Radio Station talking with people from all over the world. Bill was a member of First Alliance Church of Mansfield, American Legion Post # 265 in Wauseon, Ohio and several Wauseon community organizations.

Bill is survived by his and Mary’s sons, William W. Edwards III of Spencerport, New York, Stephen K. and Mary Edwards of Mansfield; grandchildren William W. IV and Jenifer Edwards of Brockport, NY, Mark V. and Olga Edwards of Albion, NY, Michael Kondorf, Peter (Chellie) Kondorf, Douglas (Kathy) Kondorf, Stephanie N. Daniels, Stacie A. (Mike) Gilmore, Jason A. (Virginia) Fry, Scott C. (Shannon) Edwards; great-grandchildren William W. Edwards V, Rebecca Edwards, Johnathan Edwards, Megan Delano, McKenzie Edwards, Tyler Edwards, Rigo Perez, Carmen Perez, Tamera Edwards, Paul D. (Franny) Clark, Amber Gilmore, Cassandra (John) Koenig, Shaun Gilmore, Samantha Bayford, Dylan Thomas, Katelyn Stephens, Drew Wenger, Madisyn Fry, Aleana Edwards, Arianna Edwards, Danial Kondorf; great great-grandchild Emmit Fry.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents William W. and Mary (Ferriel) Edwards, wife of 60 years, Mary A. (Amstutz) Edwards and his second wife of 6 years Neoma “Jean” Sanders Holly Edwards.

No visitation or services will be observed. Interment will be at Arlington National Cemetery with his wife Mary at a later date.     I had the honor of meeting him at Elm Croft while looking for Marine veterans to visit and dropped off a few Marine magazines for him to read from time to time.
