William “Bill” Chase

CRESTLINE: A man of strong moral values, Bill Chase was an American patriot and devoted family-man. The portrait of a hardworking American, he was also his family’s “peacemaker”. William “Bill” Chase, 81, of Crestline passed away Friday evening April 13, 2018 in his rural home surrounded by his loving family.
Bill was born March 10, 1937 in Loudonville to Willie and Dorthy (Burkepile) Chase and was graduated from Ontario High School in 1956. Eager to join the military, Bill enlisted in the Air National Guard, and completed boot camp prior to graduating high school. An aircraft mechanic, for 34 years he served with the 179th Airlift Wing earning the rank of Master Sergeant. During his tenure, Bill was the Crew Chief on the Flight Line for the F-100. Following his retirement Bill worked for 10 years at Crestview High School.
Bill first met Wanda Terman at a church youth group party. The two married on June 27, 1957. Together Bill and Wanda shared 57 years of marriage until her passing on May 13, 2015.
Active in 4-H, Bill had been the Goat Barn Superintendent. He loved working with his hands. As a mechanic he was fixing airplanes, and at home he would tend to his garden. Every June would bring his family’s favorite, delicious fresh grown strawberries.
Bill collected tractors…specifically Allis-Chalmers Tractors. As his collection expanded, both Bill and Wanda would drive across Ohio and neighboring states attending toy shows looking for his elusive tractors.
Later in life, Bill’s focus was his family, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren. A dedicated husband, dad and grandpa, Bill will be remembered for his loving and kind heart.
He is survived by his children Raymond (Peggy) Chase, Greg (Marsha) Chase and Kim (Paul) Brown all of Mansfield; six grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; siblings Mary Faye Garove of Mansfield, Jim Chase of Allen, Texas, John (Gerry) Chase of Mansfield, Helen (Ron) Rosser of Mt. Vernon, Tom (Margaret) Chase of South America, and Bob (Paula) Chase of Shelby; numerous nieces, nephews and extended family.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Willie and Dorthy Chase and brother Don Chase.
The Chase family will receive friends 4-7 p.m. Tuesday, April 17, 2018 and Wednesday, April 18 from 10-11 a.m. in the Lexington Avenue Snyder Funeral Home where a funeral service honoring his life will begin at 11 a.m. Pastor Jeff Shaull will officiate. Burial with military honors will follow in Mansfield Memorial Park.
