Warren O. Stecher, age 89, of St. Louis, Missouri, died Monday afternoon, April 19, 2010, at the Woodside Village Care Center in Mount Gilead, Ohio.
Warren was born on November 3, 1920 in St. Louis, Missouri, the son of the late Ignatz A. and Bertha E. (Fink) Stecher.
Warren was a WWII Navy Veteran. He spend much of that time playing baseball as a replacement player for those major leaguers who were overseas during the war. He then played several years in different leagues and in 1998 was voted into the Greater St. Louis Amateur Baseball Hall of Fame. He was also a member of the American Legion Post 397 in St. Louis.
Warren was employed as a technician for Southwestern Bell. He started out installing telephone poles and worked his way up the ranks. He eventually became the head of the union, the Communication Workers of America.
Warren was married to Lorraine M. Welz for more than 62 wonderful years. She preceded him in death on February 2, 2010. Together, they enjoyed traveling the country in their camper; Maine in the summer and Texas in the winter. They also loved their weekend getaway, a 200 acre farm in Bourbon, Missouri where they raised cattle and farmed hay.
He will be dearly missed by his daughter, Sue Code of Murphy, North Carolina; grandchildren: Steve Rotermund of Mount Gilead, Ohio, Craig Rotermund of Omaha, Nebraska, and Laura Danzer Marco Island, Florida; and 5 great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, April 29, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. at the Kutis Funeral Home, 10151 Gravois Avenue, Affton, Missouri 63123, with her grandson Pastor Steve Rotermund officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Park. Friends may call on the family from 1:00 p.m. until the time of the service.
