Walter W. Leighty age 93, of Mount Vernon, died Sunday April 1, 2012 at the Ohio Eastern Star Home in Mount Vernon. Walter was born March 30, 1919 in Hammond, Indiana, to the late Walter E. and Cora N. (Schaffter) Leighty. He was a Navy veteran of World War Two and was a survivor of Pearl Harbor. He had been employed as an electrician at Cooper Energy Services and United Technologies.

Walter was a member of the First Christian Church, Disciples of Christ in Mount Vernon; Mount Zion Lodge #9 F&AM in Mount Vernon; Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite, Valley of Columbus and was the only surviving, Knox County member, of the Pearl Harbor Survivors Association.

Surviving are his son Steven W. (Terri) Leighty of Mount Vernon; his daughter Catherine Anne (Joseph) Outcalt of Saint Augustine, Florida; grandchildren Nikki (Matthew) Welsh, Todd (Cassie) Outcalt, and Jay (Katie) Outcalt; great grandchildren Abbie Welsh, Kennedy Welsh, Drew Outcalt, Jake Outcalt, Morgan Outcalt, Hannah Outcalt, Natalie Outcalt and Thomas Outcalt. Besides his parents, Walter was preceded in death by his wife Pauline M. Leighty and his sister Lavonne Perry.

The family will receive friends on Saturday April 14, 2012 from 2pm to 4pm at the Dowds-Snyder Funeral Home, 201 Newark Road, Mount Vernon, Ohio, followed by masonic memorial services presented by Mount Zion Lodge. Following the masonic memorial service, military honors will be conducted by the Knox County Joint Veterans Council. Private burial will be observed at Friendship Cemetery near Mount Vernon.
