Virginia Jean Leibrand

March 24, 1924 ‒ October 11, 2007

Mansfield, Ohio

MANSFIELD: Virginia Jean Leibrand, 83, of Loran Terrace, Mansfield, died Thursday morning October 11, 2007 following a short illness.

She was born March 24, 1924 in Camden, New Jersey, and moved to Richland County in 1954 when her husband, the Rev. Thomas N. Leibrand, accepted the pastorate of the Lexington Presbyterian Church.

Virginia earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Education from Ashland College in 1966, and taught early elementary grades with the Mansfield City Schools. With 30 years of service, she retired in 1988.

She stood alongside her husband as he built the Lexington congregation to the then largest church in Lexington until his untimely death at the age of 46 on May 4, 1969.

Though she maintained her membership at the Lexington Church, she more recently attended First Presbyterian Church in Mansfield.

Quiet and somewhat private, she held an awe for nature: the handiwork of God. What others considered weeds, Virginia appreciated for their foliage, and as to dandelions “they add color to my lawn.” The Lord provides for the birds of the air ~ through Virginia! She fiercely protected her birdfeeder.

Described as an adventurer, she liked traveling, even a little ride in her 1982 mint condition Dodge convertible was a pleasure.

“You can do what you set your mind to do” she’d persuade her family, and she was interested in them and their activities ~ but not in a meddling way. Virginia leaves her family a legacy of a spirit of determination and encouragement.

She is survived by daughters and sons-in-law Sharron and James Banks and Melise and Darrel Morgan, Jr. all of Mansfield; grandchildren and their spouses Tom and Tammy Banks of Mansfield, Amanda Daugherty of Mansfield, Amy Banks of Fairborn and Joy and Travis Sooy of New Cumberland, PA; 11 great grandchildren; sisters Helen Geisler of Philadelphia, PA and Margaret Massachini of Tampa, FL; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by seven siblings.

The family will receive friends Monday, October 15, 2007 from 4 ~ 7 PM in the Lexington Avenue Snyder Funeral Home, where the service celebrating God’s gift of the Life of Virginia Leibrand will immediately follow at 7 PM. Pastor Les Vnasdale will officiate.

Entombment will be in Sunset Memorial Park Mausoleum, Philadelphia, PA.

Memorial contributions to Mansfield Christian School may be made at the funeral home.
