Violet “Vi” Longstreth Smith

Violet “Vi” Longstreth Smith, longtime Delaware resident died Wednesday evening, June 25, 2008 at Grady Memorial Hospital surrounded by her family.
She was born in Delaware County to the late Charles B. Steck and Austena M. (Bailey) Nutt. In her younger years, she worked as a timekeeper for Ranco, was manager of the bowling alley at the Memorial Union Building (MUB) at Ohio Wesleyan University, and she also took care of the snack bar at Delaware Lanes. Prior to retiring, she worked 13 years as the administrative assistance with the former Alcohol Education Program.
Preceded in death by her first husband Ralph S. Longstreth in 1970, she married Donald “Bear” Smith in 1971 and after 36 wonderful years of marriage, he died February 6, 2007.
She enjoyed needle work, sewing, and crafts. In her younger years, she frequently entertained at home with card parties and family get-togethers. She was also quite the dancer in her day. Family time was her favorite, she was a wonderful cook and her table was always open for the traditional meal of meat and potatoes – – however, her fried chicken was the best. She took pleasure in plants, flowers, and traveling, especially to the riverboat casinos. Her current passions were shopping and Diet Coke. The matriarch of the family, she also enjoyed a good sense of humor and love for fun, she will be remembered for her laugh, strong will, and determination.
Survived by Daughters and Sons-in-law: Joan and Howard Pence, Barbara Longstreth and Tommy Kaple, 5 Grandchildren and 8 Great-grandchildren: Michael Longstreth (Lynn) and Alayna, Catherine and Bob Koenig, Cassandra, Jessica, and Ryan; David and Angie Pence, Zachary, Bailey, Nicholas and Abigail; Amy Pence, Jennifer and Chris Dooley, nieces, and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husbands, she was also preceded in death by brothers: Virgil L. and Ralph W. Steck.
Funeral services will be held Saturday 1:00 p.m. at DeVore-Snyder Funeral Home, 75 W. William St., Delaware with Rev. Edna Parker officiating. Friends may call Saturday from 11:00 a.m. until the 1:00 p. m. funeral services. Burial will follow in Fairview Memorial Park.
