Violet Jean Oberlander

MANSFIELD: Violet Jean Oberlander, age 86, of Mansfield, passed away Saturday March 30, 2013 in MedCentral Mansfield Hospital.

The daughter of Louis Alfonzo and Marian Isabelle (Craven) Schnitzer, Violet was born May 18, 1926 in Mansfield. She graduated from Mt. Vernon High School.

On Christmas day 1944, Violet married William Franklin Oberlander. Together, they celebrated nearly 57 years of marriage before his death in 2001.

From a young age, Violet knew quality in clothing and worked in Mt. Vernon for Ringwalt’s Department Store. Violet also worked in the Men’s Department for Reeds Department Store in Mansfield.

Together Violet and William danced with the Appleseed Square Dancers. The two learned western square dancing and traveled across the nation dancing for numerous exhibitions. Violet danced locally as well, for the Bellville Fair and the Ohio State Fair. After William passed away, Violet also learned to line dance.

Violet also enjoyed sewing, especially outfits for her grandchildren, and square dancing costumes.

Violet was a member of First English Lutheran Church where she served on the altar guild and also volunteered preparing meals in the church kitchen.

Always placing her family first, Violet was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. Kind hearted, Violet will be remembered for her honesty. She had an exceptional love for children and loved spending time with her children and grandchildren.

She is survived by two sons James (Debra) Oberlander of Mansfield and Steven (Brenda) Oberlander of Sunbury; two daughters Cynthia Simmering of Lexington and Nancy (Gene) Hale of Mount Gilead; eight grandchildren Zachariah (Molly) Simmering, James (Kara) Oberlander, Sarah (Tad) Davis, Justin Oberlander, Amy (Robert) Ng, and Rachel, Janelle and Marian Hale; great grandchildren Bryce, Annie, Cole, Joie, Alexander, Teagan, Trevin, William, and Jenika. She is also survived by her sister Lois (Melvin) Simmons of Cincinnati.

Along with her parents she was preceded in death by her loving husband William Oberlander; infant daughters Carol and Carla; and her beloved peekapoo, Sophie.

Friends may call Wednesday April 3, 2013 from 5-7pm in the Lexington Avenue Snyder Funeral Home. Visitation will continue Thursday morning at the funeral home from 9-10 am where the funeral will follow at 10 am. The Rev. Andrew Jones will officiate. Burial will follow in Mansfield Memorial Park.
