Velma P. Woods
February 14, 1919 ‒ February 19, 2014
Velma P. Woods, age 95 of Marengo passed away Wednesday morning, February 19, 2014 at Manor Care in Westerville.
She was born on February 14, 1919 in Grahn, Kentucky to the late George and Mary (Alexander) Bailey. Moving to Columbus in 1940, she had been resident of Marengo since 1966. She worked as an inspector with Timken Roller Bearing Company in Columbus, where the handsome Albert Woods caught her eye. They were married in 1949 at which time she left Timken to raise her family, she shared 45 wonderful years with Albert until his passing in 1994.
Velma knew the Lord as her personal Savior, she was an active member of Gethsemane Baptist Church for 35 years, serving in the nursery, vacation bible school and assisting with the church dinners. In her younger years she served as her son’s den mother. Velma favored gardening and cooking in her kitchen. One never left her home on an empty stomach, she insisted on it. Her Thanksgiving table was always too small for all her fixings and homemade dishes and her pecan cinnamon rolls were simply the best.
Always the first to lend a helping hand, she was described as a true “Saint” and a “Sweetie”. Gentle and thoughtful, there was no better wife or mother. She was at her best in the kitchen, garden, or surrounded by her grandchildren.
Those left to cherish her memory include her children Jeffrey of Marengo, Michael of Canal Winchester, Candy (Rick) Presley of Marengo, and Terry (Diana) Woods of Marengo, 16 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren, and a host of extended family.
In addition to her husband, she was also preceded in death by sisters Goldie Bailey, Ruby Mobley, Judy Bright and brother Austin Bailey
Friends may call 4-8 p.m. Friday at the DeVore-Snyder Funeral Home, St Rt 229 in Marengo and one hour prior to the 2:00 p.m. funeral services on Saturday, where Pastor Dan Scarberry will officiate. Burial will follow in Marengo Cemetery.
