Shirley Ann Holt

June 22, 1931 ‒ August 11, 2016

Delaware, Ohio

Shirley Ann Holt, age 85 of Delaware passed away Thursday, August 11, 2016 at Delaware Court following an extended illness.

She was born on June 22, 1931 to the late Harold Nichols and Leona May (Houston) Nichols Searles.  Shirley spent her youth helping out at the Sunbury Grill which was owned by her parents and later graduated from Hyatts High School.

In 1949 and a blind date encounter she was introduced to Paul Holt. Sited as love at first sight, it was a love story that continued throughout their lives. Married on June 25, 1950 together they shared 65 years, raising their family, and experiencing both the joy and tribulations life brought their way.  They enjoyed life, being with friends, playing euchre, square dancing, and just having fun. Their belief and trust in God and their Savior Jesus Christ was always their strength, providing peace and comfort. Sadly Paul passed away on Veterans Day 2015.

Always willing to help and serve others, Shirley became a cashier at Albers Supermarket for 21 years followed by an additional 21 years in the service center at Buehler’s Food Market. While at Albers, she was once voted by customers as “Cashier of the Year” for this area.

Throughout the years she spent time outside of work teaching Sunday school and served twice as President of Cosmopolitan Club.  In addition she presented programs about angels, which she collected, to many area churches and organizations in the area, enjoyed Garden Club, Mothers Club, and Lady Lioness Club. She loved to embroider and made several beautiful quilts.

Shirley loved people and was always a great listener. Her shoulder was always a comfort to those in need. Loving to entertain and decorate, her home was treasured and everything had its place.

She is survived by her beloved daughter Terry (John) Reeves, grandson Paul Reeves, sister Janet Gallogly, nephew Pastor Walter (Annetta) Holt, extended family and many friends.

Friends may call 2:00 – 4:00 pm Sunday at the Snyder-Rodman Funeral Center, 101 Valleyside Dr., (formerly 1510 W. William St.) Delaware, where services Celebrating the Life of Shirley Holt will be held 11:00 a.m. Monday with Pastor’s Walter Holt and Al Perry officiating.  Burial will follow in Oak Grove Cemetery.

  • I have so many good memories of Shirley when we went to the Sunbury Church of Christ and later at her home . I lost track after we went separate ways to different churches. She was a special friend to me. Esther Dixon

  • To Terry, John, and Paul:

We are so sorry to hear about the passing of your Mother. She was always like a second Mom to me and our families have certainly made wonderful memories over the years. She will be missed by all who knew her but she is with your Dad and in good hands with God. I only wished we lived closer that I could be there for you. Your Mom and you were always there for me. You’ll always be my “sister”. Take care and we’ll talk soon.. Love, Jim and Linda

  • My late Father Bob Cruikshank was the manager of the local Albers grocery for many years and I remember Shirley as one of his valued and trusted employies. She was always nice to my brother and I when we visited. We have lived in California for many years but I still remember Shirley with good memories,
