Ruby Edith Jackson

October 09, 1944 ‒ March 15, 2020

Mount Gilead, Ohio

Ruby Edith Jackson, 75, of Mount Gilead, passed away peacefully on Sunday morning, March 15th 2020, at Morrow County Hospital after an extended battle with a blood disorder.

Ruby was born on October 9th, 1944 in Castroville, Texas, to Arthur Ray and Edith Ruby (Parshall) Sherman. Originally from Canfield Ohio, Ruby’s father Arthur served as a flight instructor for the United States Air Force at Hondo Air Base during WWII. After the war, the family moved back to Canfield where Ruby grew up with her sister, Merrily (Sherman) Figgs; and brothers: William Sherman and Thomas Sherman.

Ruby graduated from Canfield High School in 1962 and went on to attend Ohio University in Athens, Ohio, graduating in 1966 with a Bachelor’s degree in Education. Ruby came to Mt. Gilead Elementary as a cadet program teacher in 1964 to finish the year for one of the fifth grade teachers. It was there she met Olen Dale Jackson. They were married two years later on June 6th, 1966. After graduation, Ruby was hired as a full time teacher for the Mt. Gilead School district starting with the fifth grade. The following year she moved to the third grade and the year after, first grade, where she spent the remainder of her thirty-five and a half years teaching.

Ruby loved to teach. Her pumpkin play and pilgrim’s feast were staples in her first grade classroom year-after-year. After retirement, Ruby went back to teaching as a substitute teacher for Morrow County high schools. In addition to the classroom, it was important for Ruby to support her students outside the classroom as well. She and Olen were frequent attendants at athletic and other school events throughout the county.

Aside from teaching, Ruby’s greatest love was her family. She was the proud mother of: Merrily (John) Antony, Derek Jackson, and Rebecca (Joe) Weaver; and grandmother to: Zachary and Katerina Antony, Guinevere Jackson, Morgan and Mason Arbogast, and Aiden Weaver. She and Olen celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 2016 with a trip to Scotland and Ireland, and were both passionate followers of their grandchildren’s many activities. The annual family trip to Ocean Isle Beach in North Carolina was something the entire family looked forward to every year.

Ruby was an active member of Trinity United Methodist Church, a member of the Red Hat Society, the Green Pairs garden club, and the Retired Teachers Association. Ruby loved working in her garden at home which won a Backyard Garden Award in 2018 from the Columbus Dispatch, and was recently certified by the National Wildlife Federation as a Wildlife Habitat. She raised bees, was a fantastic seamstress, and baked a darn good pie. She will be dearly missed by family and friends alike.

Memorial services at Trinity United Methodist Church will be announced at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Trinity United Methodist Church, 75 E. High St., Mount Gilead, OH 43338.

  • Olen and Family, thoughts and prayers to all of you upon Ruby’s passing. Ruby was one of the little blessings that entered my, and my children’s lives, when she became their teacher. She had two of my children back to back. I volunteered faithfully to help out in class whenever the option arose. There was just something special about her and her love of teaching and being around children just gave her a glow. I had always hoped my third child would also get Ruby as a teacher, but Ruby joked and said she was retiring so she wouldn’t have another one of those “Herr kids”. Then she laughed and so did I because she always had a soft spot for my kids when she taught them and they learned so much from her. Ruby always stopped and spoke whenever I saw her out, and that is a sign of someone who truly cared about people she met and knew. I am blessed to have so many fond memories of time spent with her.

  • So sorry to hear of Ruby’s passing. She was a wonderful lady who will be greatly missed.

  • Olen and family, May you find peace and comfort at this sad time in your lives. We had so many fun times at Garden Club and other activities. Lots of good memories.

  • Mr. Jackson, my BFF of 40 years, Becca, Merrily and Derek – your home was my second home and family during my childhood years and Mrs. Jackson was a second mother to me, because we know Becca and I were inseparable after we met at the ripe age of 4 at Jeff Bryan’s birthday party. There are so many memories that have come flooding back hearing of her passing and the memories sparked from these beautiful words spoken of her. I would not even know where to begin and I could talk for hours. I was overcome with grief to hear of the loss and my unconditional love and strength is extended to you all. Mrs. Jackson, was a stickler, though with the biggest of hearts, with the lesson to teach, not only school but I learned so many lessons of life from her as well. Teaching was her gift. She will forever be missed but never forgotten.

With Much love to you all! xo

  • To Olen and Ruby’s Children and Grandchildren,

What a WONDERFUL lady and teacher Ruby was. Ruby has taught my children how to read in her 1st grade class. Ruby invited her students, parents in to see how she was teaching her students. I was so impressed with her style of teaching and the passion and love toward our children. She invited us in again for her pumpkin play and her Thanksgiving Meal. Ruby taught the students the meaning behind this holiday. Ruby also taught our children bicycle safety and other lifesaving skills. My daughter wanted a special outfit sewn for Mrs. Jackson’s Thanksgiving Day. So I made my daughter the Pilgrim Dress wear for that special day. Mrs. Jackson had to have a picture immediately taken of my daughter and herself in their Pilgrim Outfits. My daughter has always cherished that picture! I will always miss this lovely lady. My sympathy to Olen, her children and grandchildren to which she was very proud of. I loved getting her February letter. This years letter had me in tears that Ruby sent. I look forward to seeing you in heaven one day Ruby!!!

    Love Ed and Becky Sayers

  • Dear Olen and family,

All our best to you and the kids during the weeks ahead as you morn the loss of a wife, mother, grandmother and friend.

  • Dear Coach Jackson and Family,
We were heart-broken to hear of Ruby’s passing. Ruby was such a wonderful women, so full of life and spirit. I always enjoyed talking to both of you during basketball season. She was not only a great fan of Mt.Gilead Athletics, she was also very knowledgeable . Her insights were usually spot on. I still have the letters that the two of you sent us during the 2011-2012 and 2014-2015 seasons. I will always cherish them. She was a local treasure that will be deeply missed.

  • Olen and family,

Remembering Ruby so well, when she taught 1st.Grade she told me my daughter was having trouble seeing the board. We were so thankful her bringing it to our attention. I knew then she cared so much about her students. Our son also had Ruby, I remember her Pilgrim play and attending the Thanksgiving luncheon with the students. Later on no matter where I would see Ruby she would make a point to ask about Rachel and Luke. She belonged to the Red Hat Society and was always taking and picking up my mother (occasionally afterwards coming into visit with mother). She will surely be missed, such a dear, sweet lady! Our Heartfelt Sympathy to all.
