Ruby Edith Jackson
October 09, 1944 ‒ March 15, 2020
Mount Gilead, Ohio
Ruby Edith Jackson, 75, of Mount Gilead, passed away peacefully on Sunday morning, March 15th 2020, at Morrow County Hospital after an extended battle with a blood disorder.
Ruby was born on October 9th, 1944 in Castroville, Texas, to Arthur Ray and Edith Ruby (Parshall) Sherman. Originally from Canfield Ohio, Ruby’s father Arthur served as a flight instructor for the United States Air Force at Hondo Air Base during WWII. After the war, the family moved back to Canfield where Ruby grew up with her sister, Merrily (Sherman) Figgs; and brothers: William Sherman and Thomas Sherman.
Ruby graduated from Canfield High School in 1962 and went on to attend Ohio University in Athens, Ohio, graduating in 1966 with a Bachelor’s degree in Education. Ruby came to Mt. Gilead Elementary as a cadet program teacher in 1964 to finish the year for one of the fifth grade teachers. It was there she met Olen Dale Jackson. They were married two years later on June 6th, 1966. After graduation, Ruby was hired as a full time teacher for the Mt. Gilead School district starting with the fifth grade. The following year she moved to the third grade and the year after, first grade, where she spent the remainder of her thirty-five and a half years teaching.
Ruby loved to teach. Her pumpkin play and pilgrim’s feast were staples in her first grade classroom year-after-year. After retirement, Ruby went back to teaching as a substitute teacher for Morrow County high schools. In addition to the classroom, it was important for Ruby to support her students outside the classroom as well. She and Olen were frequent attendants at athletic and other school events throughout the county.
Aside from teaching, Ruby’s greatest love was her family. She was the proud mother of: Merrily (John) Antony, Derek Jackson, and Rebecca (Joe) Weaver; and grandmother to: Zachary and Katerina Antony, Guinevere Jackson, Morgan and Mason Arbogast, and Aiden Weaver. She and Olen celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 2016 with a trip to Scotland and Ireland, and were both passionate followers of their grandchildren’s many activities. The annual family trip to Ocean Isle Beach in North Carolina was something the entire family looked forward to every year.
Ruby was an active member of Trinity United Methodist Church, a member of the Red Hat Society, the Green Pairs garden club, and the Retired Teachers Association. Ruby loved working in her garden at home which won a Backyard Garden Award in 2018 from the Columbus Dispatch, and was recently certified by the National Wildlife Federation as a Wildlife Habitat. She raised bees, was a fantastic seamstress, and baked a darn good pie. She will be dearly missed by family and friends alike.
Memorial services at Trinity United Methodist Church will be announced at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Trinity United Methodist Church, 75 E. High St., Mount Gilead, OH 43338.
