Robert P. Sargent, age 89, of East Chestnut Street, Mount Vernon and formerly of Fredericktown, passed away on Thursday September 29, 2005 at Knox Community Hospital. He was born on June 21, 1916 in Fredericktown, Ohio to the late Lewis and Emma (Dibert) Sargent. Mr. Sargent owned and operated Sargent’s Market in Fredericktown for 29 years and worked as an agent for Occidental Life Insurance Company. Mr. Sargent retired after 21 years of employment with the State Department of Education.
He was a member of the Fredericktown First Baptist Church, Thrall Lodge #170 F&AM and was an early member of the Fredericktown Lions Club. Mr. Sargent was a coach and avid supporter of the Fredericktown Little League and served as timekeeper for 21 years for the Fredericktown High School football team. He was a 1935 graduate of Fredericktown High School.
He is survived by two sons, Gerald (Shirley Jane) Sargent of Mansfield, Gordon (Jenny) Sargent of Mount Vernon, a daughter, Nancy (Paul) Colopy of Mount Vernon, six grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, a sister and brother-in-law Margaret and Howard McIntire of Fort Worth, Texas and a sister-in-law Dora Sargent of Granville.
Besides his parents he was preceded in death by his loving wife Ila (Earnest) Sargent, a brother, Harold Sargent and a sister, Luella Shipley.
Friends may call on Sunday from 1 to 3 PM at the Snyder Funeral Home in Fredericktown. A memorial service will be held on Monday at 11 AM at the Fredericktown First Baptist Church, 22 East Sandusky Street, Fredericktown, Ohio 43019. Rev. Mary Miller will be officiating. The family will observe a private burial in Forest Cemetery.
