Robert E. “Bob” Jones
January 02, 1939 ‒ January 05, 2017
MANSFIELD: Robert Jones loved tomatoes, and ate at least three a day (one with every meal). When it came to tomatoes he maintained a strict routine. More importantly when it came to his family, Bob was a devoted and dependable husband, dad, and pa-pa. Robert E. “Bob” Jones, age 78, of Mansfield passed away Thursday, January 5, 2017 in Kingston of Ashland following an extended illness.
He was born January 2, 1939 in Clay County, West Virginia to Walter and Alice (Hudson) Jones. On December 23, 1961, he married Dessie Henderson. They shared 54 years of marriage and together raised four children.
Bob worked in construction and retired from Jennings & Churella. He was proud to be the oldest living member of the Labor’s Local 1216 labor union. From 1995 to 2008 Robert and Dessie worked for Tamarac Apartments in Willoughby.
Robert loved to fish and on Saturday and Sunday mornings could be found casting into the waters of the Clear Fork Reservoir. As a baseball fan he watched his favorite team, the Chicago Cubs, finally win a world series. Bob also cheered for the Cleveland Browns, Indians, Ohio State, and West Virginia football teams. He enjoyed coaching and for many years was involved in the Friendly House leagues where he coached youth baseball and basketball.
Robert and Dessie played card games with friends almost every weekend. They also enjoyed gambling and traveling to area casinos. He cherished spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and never missed their sports games and activities.
Bob is survived by his children Jackie (Glen) Barber, Susan Heil, Cindy (Russ) Elliott, and Robert Jones, Jr.; grandchildren Nicole (Byron) England, Glen Alan Barber, Jr., Christopher Barber, Joshua Barber, Chaz Elliott, Tanner Elliott, and Kellie (Bruce) Kardotzke; great-grandchildren Race Heil, Jared England, Gracie England, and Jackson and Lucas Kardotzke; brother Bill Jones of Shelby; special friends Dale (Diane) Roberts and Larry Perkins; numerous nieces, nephews and extended family.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife Dessie Jones, son-in-law Phillip Heil; siblings Walter, Lee, Wes, Alan, Audrey, Arlene, and Almie.
The family will receive friends 4-7 p.m. Monday, January 9, 2017 in the Marion Avenue Snyder Funeral Home (formerly Finefrock’s) where a funeral service celebrating his life will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday. Celebrant Jerry Wilson will officiate. Immediately following Bob’s funeral service, a luncheon will be held at Susan Heil’s house.
