Robert Wendell Irvine, age 88, of Mount Vernon, died Friday March 20, 2009 at the Knox Community Hospital in Mount Vernon. He was born April 2, 1920 in Mount Vernon and had lived his lifetime in Mount Vernon. Mr. Irvine had been a member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ for over 60 years and served on various boards of the church. Mr. Irvine graduated from Mount Vernon High School and attended The Ohio State University. He enlisted in the United States Air Force in October 1941, and served as a Sergeant in the Eighth Air Force in the European Theater and was honorably discharged from the 100th Airborne Squadron in November of 1945.

Mr. Irvine was active in the Mount Vernon Athletic Booster Club and helped at many athletic events. Mr. Irvine became a fifty-year member of Mount Zion Masonic Lodge #9 in the year 2007. He became a fifty-year member in the Valley of Columbus, Scottish Rite in the year 2008.

Mr. Irvine worked at and retired from Cooper Industries in Mount Vernon after 33 years service.

Surviving are his daughter Wendy Lee Reed of Fredericktown, his son Dan Mitchell (Nancy) Irvine of Garland Texas; two grandchildren, Lisa Ann (David) Sarty and Julie Ann (Douglas) Adams; three great grandchildren Devin Robert Adams, Drey Robert Adams and Hannah Clara Sarty and his sister Evelyn Jane Rice of Mount Vernon. He was preceded in death by his wife Maxine (Mitchell) Irvine, his father Robert Philips Irvine and his mother Verna (Halsey) Irvine.

Masonic Memorial services by Mt. Zion Lodge followed by funeral services will be Saturday March 28, 2009 at 11am at the First Congregational United Church of Christ with Rev. Keith Stuart officiating. Burial with military honors by the Knox County Joint Veterans Council will follow at Millwood Cemetery.

Friends may call at the church one-hour prior to the services on Saturday.
