Peggy Jean Calver

November 13, 1932 ‒ August 24, 2006

Mansfield, Ohio

MANSFIELD: Peggy Jean Calver, 73, of Frederick Court, Mansfield, died Thursday morning August 24, 2006 in MedCentral Mansfield Hospital following a short illness.

Now present with the Lord, Peggy has received an inheritance of an eternal home, not built by human hands (II Cor 5:1).

She was born November 13, 1932 in Mount Gilead to Lawrence and Helen (Smith) Algire, and attended Fredericktown High School with the class of 1950.

For 20 years she worked with Bechtel and The Brass Hanger Dry Cleaners.

Peggy embraced the home arts: she excelled at sewing, always making her young daughters’ own clothes. For nearly 15 years she lead the Stitch’n’Bake 4-H Club, guiding the next generation with needle and thread.

She filled her home with the scents of a loving kitchen. She not only dearly loved to cook and bake, she was skilled at it. No one else had her special touch with custard and lemon meringue pies, cream puffs and “gookie rolls” (caramel rolls).

Though she had amassed over 300 sets of salt and pepper shakers, and almost as many cream and sugar sets, it’s not what she collected that she will be remembered for: described as a wonderful wife and full of kindness, Peggy had a servant’s heart, who was full of love for her family, characterized by giving of herself to others.

A member of Ontario Free Methodist Church, her faith in the Lord Jesus Christ was central to her life. She served the church as a trustee on the church board, was active in the church kitchen and was an overall “Mary and Martha” to her church family whenever and whereever she saw the need over the past 40+ years.

She is survived by her husband Robert L. Calver, whom she married October 15, 1949; daughters and sons-in-law Betsy Calver of Mansfield, Nancy and Rick Bixler of Chesterville, Shirley Wieland of Ashland, and Cindy and Larry Cruse of Milton, IN; grandchildren Christina Coleman, Lisa Bixler, Robert Bixler, Dorraine Lampert, Matthew Thayer, J.R. Cruse and Orilla Cruse; 11 great grandchildren (and one on the way); brothers Bob Algire of Fredericktown, Larry Algire of Mt. Vernon, Jim Algire of Chesterville, and Ron Algire of Fredericktown; numerous nieces and nephews; and a host of brothers and sisters in Christ.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and a grandson Robert Calver.

The family will receive friends Sunday, August 27, 2006 from 2-5 pm in the Lexington Avenue Snyder Funeral Home. The worship service, giving Glory to God for the life of Peggy Jean Calver, will be held Monday at 11 am in Ontario Free Methodist Church, 2200 Bedford Blvd, Ontario, with Pastor Jerry Mitchell officiating. Friends may also call one hour prior to the funeral in the church building. Burial will follow in Mansfield Memorial Park.
