Orland “Orkie” F. Van Sickle, 83, of Mount Gilead, Ohio died on Sunday morning September 16, 2007 at the Woodside Village Care Center.
Orkie was a lifelong Morrow County resident, born in Peru Township on June 14, 1924 to the late Frank and Edith (McQuigg) Van Sickle.
On December 6, 1942 he married Mary F. Spohn. They shared a special bond; one that can only develop over 64 years.
Before moving to Mount Gilead in 1997, he and Mary lived in Marengo. There, he worked as a plumbing, heating and electrical contractor for Marengo Hardware. He also owned and operated O.F Van Sickle Contracting from 1973 until retiring in 2000. Orkie was available to his customers at all hours and even continued consulting years after he was unable to work.
Orkie served on the Marengo Fire Department for 23 years, 20 of those as the Fire Chief. He was a member of the Marengo United Methodist Church and the former Marengo Sportsman’s Club.
He cherished his grandchildren and enjoyed watching their sporting events as they grew up. Orkie watched golf on TV and occasionally would get out and play a round. In his younger years he enjoyed the outdoors; fishing or hunting for squirrels, rabbits, and pheasants. He also played softball.
Orkie spent his adult life as a community servant. If something needed done in terms of heating, cooling, or plumbing he was available anytime. He had a big heart and would do anything for anybody.
He is survived by his wife Mary F. (Spohn) Van Sickle; three sons Richard Van Sickle of Winchester, Kentucky, Lloyd (Laura) Van Sickle and David (Barbara) Van Sickle all of Mount Gilead, Ohio; a daughter-in-law Rita Van Sickle of Marengo, Ohio; 8 grandchildren Scott, Terah, Bonnie, Michelle, Rebecca, Erin, Kerrie, and Chad; 14 great grandchildren Austin, Kayleigh, Riley, Tristan, Taylor, Aden, Sierra, Ayla, Alysse, Nathan, Lauren, Ryan, Elizabeth, and Cameron; a brother Delson Van Sickle of Marengo, Ohio; and two sisters Wilma Hayes of Mount Gilead, Ohio, and Eunice Yake of Marion, Ohio.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his son Alan Van Sickle in 2004 and six brothers and sisters.
