Mitchell “Don” Sutherland
February 27, 1940 ‒ May 09, 2009
Mitchell “Don” Sutherland, age 69, of Cardington, died unexpectedly early Saturday morning, May 9, 2009, at the Morrow County Hospital following a brief illness.
On February 27, 1940, Don was born in Colley, Virginia, the son of Cornie (Edwards) Sutherland of Fort Smith, Arkansas, and the late Kellis Sutherland. As a family, they moved to Marengo in 1956, where Don would graduate from Marengo High School in the Class of 1958. Next, he attended Otterbein College where he studied Education for two years.
Before finishing college, Don wanted to join in the fight for his beloved country and enlisted in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War, serving from 1962 – 1966 in the 664th Radar Squadron. He was a member of the American Legion Post 710 in Marengo.
Upon his honorable discharge from the Air Force in 1966, Don returned to Morrow County where he would begin working at the HPM Corporation in Mount Gilead. Later, he worked at the Marion Power Shovel and for Wood and Wood Products in Michigan and Texas, as a machining supervisor. After retiring in 1994, he returned to Cardington where he had lived ever since.
With a love for the open road, Don’s true “pride and joy was his Ford F150,” as he would get a new truck every couple years and “trick it out.” Refusing to fly, he drove everywhere in his truck, even taking it on long trips to see his sons and grandchildren who lived at various Air Force bases throughout the United States.
Enjoying a good meal, Don made his rounds to all of his favorite restaurants. A regular at Al’s Restaurant in Cardington, as soon as they would see Don they would begin making his meal knowing already what his order would be. Prior to Al’s, he would eat with the breakfast club at Treats N’ Eats in Marengo.
An avid Buckeye fan, Don was a strong supporter of the Ohio State University football and basketball teams.
A family man, Don loved spending time with his family and most especially his beloved grandchildren.
Though he was often quiet and laid back, Don’s ornery streak often showed when he was having fun teasing and “picking at people” to get a rise out of them.
Including his mother, Don will be dearly missed by this three children: Andrew (Debi) Sutherland of Poquoson, Virginia, and their children: Erin, Katie, and Lauren Sutherland, Michael (Jennifer) Sutherland of Colorado Springs, Colorado, and their children: Nathan and Kayla Sutherland and Grace Kelly, and Jennifer (Arthur) Stovall of Westerville, and their son, Jakari Stovall; two brothers: Kenneth (Elaine) Sutherland of Marion, and Jeffrey (Donna) Sutherland of Lancaster, South Carolina; three sisters: Jane Scarry of Fort Smith, Arkansas, Sue (Ted) Deel of Marengo, and Teresa Fravel of Sunbury; and numerous nieces and nephews.
The Sutherland family will greet friends from 4 – 7 p.m. on Tuesday, May 12, at the Snyder Funeral Home, 76 S. Main St., Mount Gilead. Services celebrating his life will be held on Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. at the Owl Creek Primitive Baptist Church, 7397 County Road 22 (Waterford Road), Fredericktown, Ohio 43019, with Pastor Jack Griffith and Pastor Darvin Edwards officiating. Burial with military honors provided by the V.F.W. Post 8054 and the AmVets Post 87 will follow in North Fork Cemetery, behind the church.
