Miriam Alice (Palm) Nixon formerly of Willow Lane in Mount Gilead died Wednesday September 2, 2009 at the Morrow Manor in Chesterville. She was 98.

She was born on June 26, 1911 in Lexington, Ohio the daughter of the late Harry Andrews and Rhoda Loretta (Hainer) Palm.

Miriam married Gaylord Jay Nixon on October 31, 1938. They raised 4 children and were married for 34 years before his death on December 6, 1972.

Later, her son Ron built her home on Willow Lane; a home she was very proud of and lived in until moving to an assisted living and later to Morrow Manor.

Miriam enjoyed playing the piano and organ and would play occasionally at Trinity United Methodist Church were she was a member. Her membership spanned over 70 years and she was actively involved in the United Methodist Women, was a Sunday school teacher, and could be found in the kitchen whenever the church would provide a meal.

One to always lend her talents as a seamstress, Miriam made her daughter’s wedding dress and the bridesmaid’s dresses. She also crocheted numerous Afghans.

Miriam was quite fond of her flower garden at home and was a longtime member of the Wayside Garden Club.

She was always willing to volunteer her time and was in the Tangerine TWIG at the Morrow County Hospital.

When her children were younger she participated in the Boy and Girl Scouts and 4-H Club.

She will be missed by her son Ronald and his wife Mary Jean Nixon of Mount Gilead, Ohio; her three daughters and their spouses Judith and Gary Dunn of Sidney, Ohio, Maxine and Jim Reesman of Medina, Ohio, and Mary Ellen and Marvin Gillson of Butler, Ohio; seven grandchildren Kathleen, Carol, Jodi, Korrina, Jeff, Jayson, and Ronald Jay; 13 great grandchildren, and 5 great great grandchildren; a brother Wendell H. Palm of Canton, Georgia; and nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband she was preceded in death by her grandson Michael Holtrey; and her brother Robert Blake Palm.

Rev. Charles Graham will conduct graveside services on Saturday September 5, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. at Bryn Zion Cemetery. Her family will also greet friends at the Snyder Funeral Home, Craven Chapel, 67 N. Main St., Mt. Gilead, from 10 – 11 a.m. prior to the graveside services.
