Mary Elizabeth “Ibby” Curl

April 10, 1913 ‒ July 13, 2008

Mount Gilead, Ohio

Mary Elizabeth “Ibby” Curl, age 95, formerly of 233 Hillside Street, Mount Gilead, passed away on Sunday afternoon, July 13, 2008, in Marion, Ohio, following a brief illness.

She was born in Mount Gilead, Ohio, on April 10, 1913, the daughter of the late Frank and Mary (Wilson) Morton. Ibby graduated from Mount Gilead High School in the Class of 1931, and went on to graduate from The Columbus Business School.

Upon her graduation from college, Ibby worked as the bookkeeper for Gulf Oil and Refining in Marion for many years.

During her time at Gulf Oil, she met Donald Curl, whom she married on April 15, 1939. In 1947, Ibby and Don would become co-owners and operators of her family’s business, Morton’s Hardware on Main Street in Mount Gilead, which they ran until they retired in 1975.

Following their retirement, Ibby and Don enjoyed being snowbirds in the Florida Keys, and loved their many travels, some of which were international trips. After over 64 years of marriage, Don preceded her in death on June 27, 2003.

A woman of deep faith, Ibby was a devoted member of the First Baptist Church, where she sang in the church choir and served on many committees as long as she was able. Last year her church held a celebration honoring Ibby and two others for being members of the church for over seventy five years.

A very active member of the Mount Gilead community throughout her entire life, Ibby was a member of the Burgoyne Chapter of the Easter Star, the American Legion Auxiliary, a charter member of Sorosis II, and was a Red Cross Volunteer worker.

With a love of nature and a green thumb, Ibby loved to plant her flower garden every year, which most would describe as “gorgeous.” Throughout her garden and outside her windows you would find numerous bird feeders, many of which were built by her husband Don, so she could watch her beloved birds. She also enjoyed anything musical, reading, and time with friends.

In December of 2007, Ibby moved to Marion to be with her daughter and family.

She will be dearly missed by her daughter and son-in-law, Sharon and David Williamson of Marion; two grandchildren: Shelley (Christopher) St. John of Belle Isle, Florida, and Jeffrey (Kristi) Williamson of Atlanta, Georgia: five great-grandchildren: Parker Ty St. John, Casey Rex St. John and Mercer McKay St. John of Florida, Emery Eve Williamson and Brayden Andrew Williamson of Atlanta, Georgia; one sister, Alice Louise “Weezie” (John) O’Shaughnessy of Oriental, N.C.; and numerous nieces and nephews, including her niece, Susan (Pete) Bailey of Mansfield, Ohio.

Including her parents and husband, Ibby was preceded in death by two sisters: Ruth Gallagher and Martha Ashbaugh.

A Celebration of Ibby’s Life will be held on Thursday, July 17, at 10:00 a.m. at the First Baptist Church, 51 W. High St., Mt. Gilead, with Pastor Robert Hughes officiating.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Snyder Funeral Homes of Mount Gilead.
