Mary Elizabeth Gehres Deeley, age 93, of Yauger Road, Mount Vernon, passed away on Thursday, December 13, 2012 at the Emeritus at HillenVale. She was born on July 10, 1919 in Mount Vernon, Ohio to the late Charles and Marguerite (Allen) White. Mary graduated in 1941 from Ohio Wesleyan University earning a B.A. in English. She later served as a school teacher in Poughkeepsie, New York, New Orleans, Louisiana, Mount Vernon City Schools, Fredericktown and East Knox.

During World War II, Mary served as a Red Cross Nurse in Korea and director of the Officers Club in Seoul, Korea. She was a member of the Delta Gamma Sorority, past president of the Psi Iota Xi and St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Mount Vernon.

She is survived by her daughter, Bina Jean Gehres of Cranston, Rhode Island, a son, Hewitt Charles Gehres of Jupiter, Florida, nephews, Peter White of Shoteau, Montana, Chuck White of Greensboro, North Carolina, nieces, Jody White of Greensboro, North Carolina and Sandy Briggs of Hinton, Virginia, step daughter, Jane (Dr. Don Greer) Carr of Boerne, Texas, step daughter-in-law, Rebecca Deeley.

Besides her parents she was preceded in death by her first husband, Freeman Gehres, second husband, Dr. George Deeley, step son, Dr. William Deeley, brother, Dr. Charles A. White and a sister, Barbara Shehee.

Friends may call on Monday from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Dowds-Snyder Funeral Home. A graveside service will be held on Tuesday at 10 a.m. in Mound View Cemetery in Mount Vernon.

Memorial contributions in Mary’s name may be made to Hospice of Knox County.
