MANSFIELD: Mary Steel passed away Tuesday, February 5, 2019 from OhioHealth Mansfield. She was 81.

She was born September 26, 1937 to parents John & Lena (Frederick) Mergel in Mansfield. Mary graduated from St. Peter’s High School with the class of 1955.

On April 25,1959, she married Robert Steel and they shared 59 wonderful years of marriage together.

In spare time, she took pleasure in vegetable gardening, canning, crocheting and dancing polka. She enjoyed traveling and even got to dance polka on a steamboat while going down the Ohio River. She was a member of the Catholic faith and was active at church as a lector and previously sang in the choir. She was also a member of the Mansfield Liederkranz for 26 years.

She is survived by husband Robert Steel; son Rick Steel and Mark (Brenda) Steel; sister Lena M. Tetrault; brothers John Mergel, Joe (Joan) Mergel and Fred (Kate) Mergel; several nieces & nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and sister Elizabeth Melton.

The Steel family will receive friends Saturday, February 9, 2019 from 10-11 a.m. in Resurrection Parish (2600 Lexington Avenue) where a Mass of Christian Burial honoring Mary’s life will begin immediately at 11 a.m. Father Nick Weibl will speak. Burial in Mansfield Catholic Cemetery will take place Monday at 10 a.m.

  • DEAR BOB AND SONS, IT IS WITH DEEP REGRET THAT I AM WRITING THIS NOTE. I WILL MISS MARY GREATLY AS SHE WAS AN ACTIVE MEMBER OF OUR CLASS , BOB’S CLASS OF 54, ACTIVITIES. SHE WILL BE MISSED.
    I ALWAYS ENJOYED HER READING OF THE SCRIPTURE AT THE SATURDAY EVENING MASSES. SHE SEEMED TO LOVE DOING THIS…. SHE ALWAYS SPOKE LOUDLY AND CLEARLY TO BE SURE WE ALL HEARD GOD’S WORD.
