Lourita Rachel Strong Heiliger

LEXINGTON: Lourita Rachel Strong Heiliger, 94, of Lexington, died Friday evening, May 23, 2008 in Colonial Manor Health Care Center, Loudonville, following a one month stay.

She was born February 18, 1914 in Brokensword to James Garfield and Leona Mildred (Simpson) Myers and was graduated from Lykens High School in 1932. Lourita also graduated from Bowling Green University with a degree in education in 1962.

In 1937 she married Oron Brice Strong, who preceded her in death September 17, 1970.

Lourita taught kindergarten through third grade for 29 years. During that time she also was school principal. Lourita began her teaching career at a private children’s home teaching kindergarten through third grade in one classroom. The school was later consolidated into Thompson Local Exempt School District and later Bellevue School District as well. She retired in 1974.

Lourita moved from Flat Rock, to the Mansfield area shortly after retirement. During this time she worked as a substitute teacher in Richland County.

Lourita dedicated more than just her career to the care of children. She opened her home to foster many children in both Seneca and Richland Counties.

On August 20, 1983 she married William Heiliger, who preceded her in death in 1993.

Lourita was a member of First Alliance Church where she taught Sunday school.

She enjoyed playing the piano and needlework especially embroidery. Her summers were spent tending to her flower and vegetable gardens and canning for the winter. Lourita also enjoyed reading historical and spiritual novels.

Family came first to Lourita, whether they were her children, stepchildren, or foster children, all were given love and special attention. She loved cooking for her family or anyone else that would show up at her door. It was important to Lourita that her family had dinner together.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law James and Marla Strong of Perrysville, daughter Ruth Strong of Lexington, and son and daughter-in-law Bud and Sharon Strong of Perrysville; step-daughter Margaret Fronizer of Holland, Ohio, step-son and his wife Larry and Joyce Heiliger and step-daughter Sheryl Boesch all of Plainfield, Indiana, a step-son and his wife Franklin Heiliger and April Mason of Fort Collins, Colorado; eight grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren, 22 step-grandchildren, 30 step-great grand children, and 17 step-great-great grandchildren; a sister Florence Kuhlins of Newark, numerous nieces and nephews, and her two cats Mandy and Kitty Kat.

Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband Oron Strong, her second husband William Heiliger, her step-father the Rev. Simon Drummond, two step-sons Paul Strong, and John Thurlon Strong, two sisters Dorothy Cover and Juanita Sheaffer, a step-sister Donna Derr, one granddaughter, and two step-granddaughters.

The family will receive friends Tuesday, May 27, 2008 from 6-8 pm in the Lexington Avenue Snyder Funeral Home where the funeral service will be held Wednesday at 10am. The Rev. James C. Cheatham will officiate, and burial will follow in Bishop Seybert Memorial Cemetery in Flat Rock.
