Leonard N. Sagar Jr.
January 06, 1948 ‒ August 08, 2014
Leonard N. Sagar Jr., age 66 of Marengo passed away Friday, August 8, 2014 at home following a brief illness.
He was born at home in Marengo on January 6, 1948 to the late Leonard and Ester (Ayers) Sagar. A member of the Highland High School Class of 1966, he served as Class Secretary and excelled in track.
For over 30 years he worked as a carpenter for the City of Westerville. He was skilled tradesman in all facets of construction. From the masonry to the roof, he could build a house from the bottom up.
Leonard was a simple man. He enjoyed gardening and hunting, especially for coon and turkey. A true landmark of the Marengo community, one could set their watch to his daily bus route. He ventured out daily to observe the happenings of his community, to scout for deer, turkey, and what the area farmers were up to.
Everything had its place with Leonard. He was one who meticulously cared for his sentimental treasures and was a devoted member of the Harmony Baptist Church. Thrifty and to the point of frugal, he was never one to boast. While witty and caring, he was described as rough around the edges, but with a soft heart. Ornery and never wanting to be bothersome, he was one who kept you thinking.
His garage was always open to community friends and neighbors; it was truly a special place. Family was precious; he treasured home and spending time with his grandchildren and attending their activities. In Leonard’s words, “It is what it is”.
Those left to cherish his memory include his sons Tracy (Denise) Sagar and Chris (Laurie) Sagar all of Marengo, grandchildren Samantha”Sammie”, Cassady, Seth, and Zachary, his sweetie Charlotte Baker, sisters Glorene Bannick of Longmont, CO, Kathleen Frye of Harbor Bay, WA, sister-in-law Marily Sagar of Dunnegan, MO, and numerous garage buddies.
He was also preceded in death by sisters Dolly Phillips, Juanita Thomas, Romona Sagar, and brother Charles.
Friends may call 4-8 p.m. on Tuesday at the DeVore-Snyder Funeral Home, SR’s 3 at 61, Sunbury, where services will be held 10:00 a.m. Wednesday with Pastor Jason Martin officiating. Burial will follow in Marengo Cemetery.
