Leonard H. “Lennie” Saunders, age 60, of Mount Gilead, passed away Tuesday morning, February 18, 2020, at Galion Community Hospital, following a brief illness.

He was born on April 7, 1959, in Mount Gilead, to the late Howard W. Saunders and Jeannette A. (Belcher) Saunders whom survives. Lennie graduated from Highland High School with the class of 1977.

On October 3, 1981, Lennie married the love of his life, Lisa R. Tinch, at Waterford Church of Christ.

For 25 years Lennie dedicated his career to Snyder Milling Service out of Marengo. After Snyder’s, Lennie worked for Rick Daiber Trucking out of Marion and Bucyrus.

Lennie loved the great outdoors. When he was young, his family lived in Canada where they ran a hunting lodge of which he enjoyed reminiscing about. Lennie was an avid hunter and fisherman. His love for the outdoors led to him joining the Trappers Association, Safari Club International, Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, and lifetime member of the NRA.

A man of faith, Lennie attended Pleasant Grove Church. On the weekends Lennie could often be found cheering on the Browns and Buckeyes. Having an interest in beer steins, Lennie was a member of the Budweiser Stein Club.

Most of all Lennie loved spending time with his family. For over 20 years Lennie would volunteer to assist with fundraisers for his children’s music and athletic boosters program which he continued on after they graduated. He often could be spotted helping in the food stands at home games or collecting money at gate A for the county fair. His greatest enjoyment was the time he got to be around his kids, nieces, nephews, and especially his grandkids.

He will be dearly missed by his wife of 38 years, Lisa; children: Andrew (Leslie) Saunders of Mount Vernon and Ben Saunders of Mount Gilead; grandchildren: Joscelynn and Grayson Saunders; mother, Jeannette Saunders of Sparta; brother, Ted Saunders of Marengo; mother-in-law, Karen (Ron) Christman; sister-in-laws: Tammy (George) Pennington and Kelly (Steve) Castline; nieces and nephews: Holly (Andrew) Dudgeon, Heather (Aaron) Condron, Cody (Tabitha) Castline, Rick Pennington, Amanda (Ryan Coldwell) Pennington, Nathan (Amy) Saunders; great nieces and nephews: Riley, Laila, Hallie, Landon, Leyton, David, Cassy, Hannah, Barrett, Abby, Oakley, and Ian.

Lennie was preceded in death by his father, Howard, in December of 2012.

His family will greet friends from 11 AM to 1 PM on Saturday, February 22, 2020, at the Snyder Funeral Home, Craven Chapel. (67 N. Main St., Mount Gilead, OH 43338) A celebration of his life will follow there at 1 PM with Pastor Don Linn officiating. Burial will follow at Bloomfield Cemetery.

  • I amy truly sorry to hear this news. Lenny stayed in touch with me (a high school friend a year a head of him) through Facebook. He was always kind with his posts and comments. His family was blessed to have such a loving and gentle soul in their circle. The memories will last forever! I am blessed to have known him. Love and prayers to those close to him.
