November 02, 1941 ‒ June 30, 2013

Adairo, Ohio

MANSFIELD: It was his kindness and honesty, all wrapped up with a comfortable sense of humor that made Larry Smallstey so attractive. He was always active – whether at work or volunteering – Larry’s amiable personality made him a trusted business associate and a dear friend.

Larry passed away Sunday evening, June 30, 2013 in MedCentral Mansfield Hospital. He was 71.

Born November 2, 1941 in Leechburg, Pennsylvania, to George A. and Nellie R. (Pearson) Smallstey, he was graduated from Mansfield Senior High School in 1959, and was a proud alumni of the Senior High Marching Band. He attended The Ohio State University and began his career with the Sweetheart Cup Company as a sales associate. He earned his real estate license and sold property for Mecurio Realty. And later retired from Gordon Food Service.  Larry loved people, and cherished the times he could serve his friends with real estate, or at Ingram Oldsmobile or Deer Ridge Golf Club or as courtesy driver with Joyce Buick.

Larry was a member of Little Washington Congregational Church and a former member of the Mansfield Board of Realtors. He volunteered with Raemelton Therapeutic Equestrian Center and delighted in the antics of his Labrador Retrievers Duke and Maggie.

Described as a “Master at the Grill,” he enjoyed entertaining his family and friends and was an avid fan of the Cleveland Indians and The Ohio State Buckeyes.

Larry is survived by his wife Lynne Ellen (Berry) Smallstey, whom he married July 5, 2003; his daughter Sherry Smallstey and his son and daughter-in-law Andy & Tammy Smallstey both of Mansfield, his daughter Robin Lentz of Cozumel, Mexico; grandchildren Cody Dalton, Brandon Dalton, Tyler Lentz and Toby Lentz; step children Kerry Greer of Mansfield and Megan Cho of North Canton; step grandchildren Kaitlyn Greer, David Cho and Maria Cho; and a sister and brother-in-law Linda & Tom Curry of Mansfield.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his granddaughter Kelsey Smallstey and his brother Donald Smallstey.

The Smallstey family will receive friends Sunday, July 7, 2013 from 2 to 5 p.m. in the Finefrock Chapel of the Marion Avenue Snyder Funeral Home. The funeral service will be held Monday at 11 a.m. in Little Washington Congregational Church, 2323 Washington South Road, Mansfield with Pastor Dave Root officiating. Private interment will be in Mansfield Cemetery.

Contributions in his memory to either the Richland County Humane Society or the Scholarship Fund of Little Washington Congregational Church may be made at the funeral home.
