Kenneth J. Underwood Sr.
August 31, 1937 ‒ July 23, 2009
Kenneth J. Underwood Sr., age 71, of Morral, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday evening, July 23, 2009, at his residence surrounded by his loving family following an extended illness.
On August 31, 1937, Kenny was born in Auxier, Kentucky, the son of the late Frank Underwood and Lou Emma (Davis) Hall.
Moving to Marion in 1956 with his father, he began working, at the Depot Restaurant where a cousin introduced him to Tina Ingraham-Cross. Soon thereafter, they married on June 28, 1957, in Columbus. Together they shared over fifty two wonderful years of marriage.
Soon after leaving the Depot, Ken worked for over ten years at the Marion Brick Company. Later, in 1967, he began working at Tecumseh, where he worked for eighteen years until they closed the plant. Lastly, he worked at Millington Plastics.
A man of deep faith, Ken was a devoted member of the White Oaks Rd. Freewill Baptist Church. His family is grateful for their continued dedication and support.
With a love for music, Ken learned to play the guitar and sing at a young age in Kentucky. After moving to Marion he would play in several country and western bands locally, and later he enjoyed playing in Gospel bands traveling as far as Kentucky and West Virginia.
A family man, Ken loved rounding up his children when they were younger and going camping all throughout the United States and Canada to set up their tents and camper. Later in life, he looked forward to whenever his grandchildren would come over and he always made sure they were well fed.
Always hard at work, Ken gave everything of himself to whatever he was doing. In spite of physical setbacks, he would get creative to try and figure out how to get whatever needed done accomplished.
Having a great sense of humor, Kenny loved to tease and joke with everyone. And his worries were never for himself, instead he always wanted to make sure everyone else was taken care of.
Ken will be dearly missed by his wife, Tina Underwood of Morral; five children: Kay (Jeff) Hass of Marengo, Teresa (Keith) Layne of Marion, Kenneth (Susie) Underwood Jr. of Mount Gilead, Tina Alm of Morral, and Leroy “Joey” (Laona) Underwood Sr. of Whitesburg, Tennessee; foster daughter, PV2 Sunshine McBee; eleven grandchildren: Scott Pickens Jr,, Tirza Hitzges, Dustin Layne, Christopher Salyers, Mara Layne, Stephanie Underwood, Cynthia Underwood, and Leroy Underwood Jr.; 8 great grandchildren and nine brothers and sisters: David Davis, Thurman Hall, Lola Music, and Rosemary Hall, all of Kentucky, Roy Underwood, Linda Uncapher, Christine Somerlot, Bruce Underwood, and Cheryl Welch, all of Marion; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Ken was preceded in death by his brother, Steve Underwood; and sister, Susie Underwood.
The Underwood family will receive friends from 2 – 4 and 6 – 8 p.m. on Monday, July 27, at the Denzer-Farison-Hottinger & Snyder Funeral Home, 360 E. Center St., Marion, where services celebrating his life will be held on Tuesday at 10:00 a.m. with Rev. Danny Dickerson officiating. Burial will follow in Grand Prairie Cemetery.
