BELLVILLE: Kenneth “Doc” Daugherty, 97, of Durbin Road, Bellville, died Monday afternoon September 19, 2005 in MedCentral Mansfield Hospital following a short illness.

He was born July 2, 1908 in Bellville to John M. and Lula (Day) Daugherty, and attended Bellville Schools.

In 1945 Kenneth opened Daughtery’s Inc. a SOHIO service station and grocery on State Route 13 at O’Possum Run Road, near the I-71 interchange. In 1952 he and his wife Josephine added Daugherty’s Restaurant on the site, and in 1971 added a banquet room. The complex for good homestyle meals, food staples and gasoline became a landmark not just for locals, but for interstate travelers as well.

Ken always supported the community that supported him. In 1948 he founded Washington Township Fire Department, and served as its charter fire chief for 15 years.

He was a member of the Ohio Restaurant Association, Eagles Lodge #336, Mansfield, was a past member of Ohio Fire Chiefs Association, and was a honorary member of the State Highway Patrol Association.

As a member of Fun Center Sams Chapter #46, Kenneth delighted in traveling and camping, right up to age 90.

He is survived by sons and daughters-in-law Thomas and Marilyn Daugherty of Mansfield and Allen and Joyce Daugherty of Mount Gilead; seven grandchildren; twelve great grandchildren; a great great granddaughter; and nieces and nephews.

His wife of 72 years Josephine (Walker) Daugherty, preceded him in death on November 13, 2000. Also deceased are two brothers Walter and Harold Daugherty, and two sisters Gertrude Yarger and Edith Spayde.

The family will receive friends Thursday, September 22, 2005 from 5-8 pm in the Bellville Snyder Funeral Home, where the funeral service will be held Friday at 11 am. Burial will follow in Mansfield Memorial Park.

Memorial contributions to Washington Township Fire Department or Jefferson Township-Bellville Rescue Squad may be made at the funeral home.
