Joseph B. Tuscan

Joseph B. Tuscan, 86, of 415 Chestnut Place, Galion, died Wednesday, Nov. 8, 2006 at Galion Community Hospital.
Born Mar. 9, 1920 in Galion, he was the son of the late Bruno Tuscan and Maria Carbo Tuscan. He was preceded in death on Nov. 16, 2000 by his wife, Catherine Ann Powers Tuscan whom he married on Oct. 12, 1946.
He graduated from Galion High School in 1939 and was a World War II U.S. Army combat veteran, participating in extensive action in the Philippine Islands. He was featured in Life Magazine while in the combat zone. He also served as a personal body guard for General Douglas McArthur.
After the war Joe returned to Galion and helped establish V.F.W. Post 4329. He was in the restaurant business for many years, with his brother, owning and operating the Palladium Restaurant and the Coral Dining Room in Uptown Galion.
Joe and his brother, along with Willis Pry, built, owned and operated the Ambassador Motel and Restaurant. He was proud of the fact that he introduced pizza to Galion. He was an excellent cook and was appreciated for his renowned homemade spaghetti sauce, the recipe which he passed on to his family. He helped form Galion’s semi-pro football team. He, along with others, was very active raising funds to build Heise Park Football Stadium. He was a lifetime member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. He was a fourth degree member of Knights of Columbus St. Francis Council 1234. He was a member of American Legion Scarborough Post 243, V.F.W. Post 4329, Galion Elk’s Lodge 1191, Galion Moose Lodge 303 and Galion Eagles Aerie 630.
He kept a close knit family and was dedicated to his feisty dog, and almost constant companion, “Pepper”.
Surviving are his two sons and daughters-in-law, David and Barbara Tuscan of Simsonville, S.C. and Robert and Janice Tuscan of Galion; five grandchildren, Scott and Eric Tuscan of Simsonville, S.C., Kelly Phelps and Bryan and Lesley Tuscan of Galion and one great grandson, Zachary Phelps.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Armando Tuscan and twin granddaughters.
Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 10, 2006 at Richardson-Davis Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 11, 2006 at St. Joseph Catholic Church with Very Rev. Michael Schelling, Pastor/Dean, officiating. Burial will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery with full military honors conducted by the United States Army and the Galion/Crestline area veterans organizations.
Vigil Services will be held at 8 p.m. Friday at Richardson-Davis Funeral Home with Deacon Greg Kirk officiating.
