John A. “Jack” Backora Jr.

August 28, 1935 ‒ March 09, 2016

Lewis Center, Ohio
Formerly of Condit, Ohio

John A. “Jack” Backora Jr., age 80, of Lewis Center and formerly of Condit died Wednesday, March 9, 2016 after years of various heart and respiratory problems.  He is now at peace.

He was born on August 28, 1935 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania the son of the late John A. Sr. and Helen (Marshal) Backora.

He was a graduate of Alleghany High school in Pittsburgh and served in the United States Navy on the U.S.S. Coral Sea as an office worker.  Towards the end of his service, his father, a Presbyterian minister, was transferred to a church in Condit; thus began Jack’s nearly 60 year connection to Delaware County.

In 1961 he married Iva Ruth Wilson at the Condit Presbyterian Church; a partnership and friendship that has lasted 54 years.

Jack was an office worker for a local trucking company for 18 years until their unexpected closure forced him to find work elsewhere.  That opportunity led him to American Showa in Sunbury where he worked on the paint line for 18 years until his retirement.

Quiet and reserved would be words used to describe Jack unless he was watching the Steelers or OSU football.  He was very passionate about his two teams.

Jack loved mowing his yard on his John Deere tractor and you knew when things began to get serious with his health when he allowed others to mow for him.

You often could find him on his deck reading a favorite mystery or birdwatching.

Jack will be remembered as a man with a quiet strength…steady and in the background…always there to support the ones he loved…lead by example.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife Ruth; their daughter Marsha Backora of Lewis Center; two granddaughters he and Ruth raised as their own, Holly Snider and her husband Jamieson of Marysville;and  Brianna Urena-Sanchez and her husband Rodrigo of Columbus of grandchildren Aprell Quinn and her partner Ryan of Lewis Center, Alex Canaday and her partner Ben of Utica, Jacob Myers of Delaware, and Skylar Groves of Columbus; sister Roberta Garrett of Flushing, Ohio; brother-in-law Ed Wilson and his wife Tammy of South Carolina; nieces and nephews Nancy Long and her husband Jeff of Centerburg, Roger Wilson of South Carolina, Mike Wilson and his wife Allison of South Carolina, and Tammy Garrett of West Virginia;and 6 great grandchildren nine great nieces and nephews; good friends Rick and Debbie Ross of Galena; and his best of friend and pal, his dog Luke.

A private family service will be held at a later date.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Delaware County Veteran’s Services, Wolf Building, 149 North Sandusky Street, Delaware, Ohio 43015
