Jeremiah Johnson

September 22, 1977 ‒ January 02, 2016

Marysville, Ohio
Formerly of Johnsville, Ohio

Jeremiah D. “Slick” Johnson, age 38, of Marysville and formerly of Johnsville died unexpectedly Saturday, January 2, 2016.

He was born in Mount Gilead, the son of Darrel Johnson and Teresa (Shaffer) Givens, on the morning of Thursday September 22, 1977.

He attended Northmor High School and worked, for the last seven years, at Armstrong World Industries in Hilliard as a Lead Paint Mixer.

Janet Maples was his partner and best friend for 12 years.  They traveled together taking trips to the beaches of Florida and California, hiking the White Mountains, Yosemite, and Kings Canyon.  They had just scheduled a trip for the end of the month to the Netherlands.  In her words, on their hiking trips Jeremiah “always found his own path, never the beaten path which always made for an adventure”.

He and Janet lived in their dream home, “the retreat”, on 9.5 acres outside Marysville.  The house overlooked a pond surrounded by woods and he loved working on it and spending time there with Janet and his loyal dog Jack and cat Garfield.

He recently purchased his dream car a 2012 Dodge Challenger with a 392 Hemi; Header Orange with black stripes.

Jeremiah will be remembered as a caring and giving man with a touch of stubbornness.  His heart of gold always showed when he was with Janet’s three grandchildren.  He adored and spoiled them.

In addition to his fiancé, Janet he is survived by his mother, Teresa of Mount Gilead; his grandmother, Virginia Shaffer of Johnsville;  Janet’s son Derrick (Morgan) Claprood of Lithopolis; three grandchildren, Ava, Ace, and Alaina; half-sister, Peggy Sue Kinney of Galion; Aunts and Uncles, Howard “Spike” Shaffer, Larry and Elizabeth Queen, and Lori and Toby Hughes; Angela and Dale Van Horn; cousins Briana and Lindsay Van Horn, Shelby Queen, Sarah (Mark) Queen, Nick (Holly) Queen, Alexandria (Chris) Beetham, Josh (Alli) Hess, Amanda (Joe) Martini, Samantha Ross, Tommy Shaffer; and his constant companion, Jack his Jack Russell Terrier and his cat Garfield.

Friends may call on the family on Thursday, January 7, 2016 from 4-8 PM at the DeVore-Snyder Funeral Home, 637 North State Route 61, Sunbury, Ohio 43074.  Funeral services will be held there Friday at 11:00 AM with Pastor Pete Jankowski officiating.  Burial will follow in Shauck Cemetery in Johnsville.

  • Slick, man I’m gonna miss you. I always knew I could take a nap at mom’s because you would take all our kids outside and ride 4 wheelers, catch tadpoles and run through the mud with them for hours. You spoiled my kids with 4 wheelers and taught them how to ride fast with no fear. Just last night mom and I were struggling to get the ducks in the pen while the kids were outside wanting to play; you would have snatched the ducks up and had the kids on 4 wheelers in the amount of time it took us to just find the damn ducks! I’m gonna miss shooting guns with you, and having to change my underwear after taking rides in the Challenger…well, I’ll miss going fast with ya.

  • I’m so sorry for your loss. I remember Jeremiah as a fun-loving, albeit, ornery classmate. I pray that you’re able to find comfort during this time.

  • Miah, you will be so very missed by Janet’s family, from her son, daughter-in-law and grandkids who loved you so much, Janet’s siblings and mother who knew you were taking care of Janet better than we could of asked from anyone! We rest a little easier knowing you are with your Grandpa who you adored! We have loved you and will always remember our “Miah”

  • Janet and family I’m so sorry for your loss. I saw firsthand how much Miah loved the grandkids and they loved him just as much in return. He was a wonderful man and a true gentleman. He opened doors for me, helped me get up and down bleachers at Ava’s games, even rescued me when one of the bleachers was loose and caused me to fall. He jumped down so quick to help me and no one else even moved. I’ll never forget his compassion in making sure I was okay. Heaven has gained an angel to watch over all of us. Hugs, love and prayers for all of you!!

  • To all the family, you’re in my thoughts and prayers. You have many special memories of a special man. I remember Jeremiah’s mom, Theresa, loved the movie “Jeremiah Johnson” sounds like he lived up to his namesake. Love!

  • Angela, Dale, Briana, Lindsay and Janet, So very sorry for the loss of Jeremiah. What a great man, who will be very missed by many. • My condolences to the family ! I worked with Jeremiah @Armstrong , he was a good worker and friend . Sadly missed by many. RIP buddy!

  • Janet and family, our hearts break for you during this time of sorrow. It is just so unfair when they are taken so suddenly and so young. We miss the times hanging out with you and Miah and chillin’ on the porch, the wild 4-wheeler rides through the woods, late night story telling, and laughing till we cried. What a great young man, taken too soon. Janet, just take it one minute, hour, and day at a time. As you know, we have been through this more than once and the grieving process is one long process that comes with many peaks and valleys. Praying that you find the peace during this stormy time. Just know that although your family and friends can’t take your pain away, but we can be here for you to lean on in the days and years to come. Love ya!!

  • Teresa I am so sorry to hear of yout loss. Many thoughts and prayers to you and your family.

  • Janet,my heart aches for you and your family.
I pray that God’s comfort and peace will surround you during this difficult time.
I am sorry that I am not able to be there but we are out of town.
Just know that you are close in your heart and prayers. Love,Sandy

  • Teresa, Jenny, Spike and all other family members…we can’t begin to imagine the hurt and loss you are all experiencing now. Have faith that all of Jeremiah’s troubles are gone and he is resting peacefully at last. Remember him with all the joy in your heart that he brought to all of you in his life.

  • This is from John,Jennifer, and Jacob Picklesimer . We are the neighbor across the road.Jeremiah was a caring man that would help anyone in need.We never had to clear the driveway of snow because he would do it without a second thought. He will be sadly missed. If there is anything we can do for the family, don’t hesitate.

  • It is with a sad but joyful heart I read of Jeremiah’s passing. Sad because family, friends, and all who had life connections at some point in time with Jeremiah understand that Jeremiah’s wonderful smile and exuberant personality will live on within our hearts and minds and will no longer be in the physical presence as we know it. Joyful because we know God blessed Jeremiah with those gifts that will continue to bless us….Jeremiah’s smile, laughter, and zest for life.
    Prayers for all,
    Mary Carroll
