Hazel I. Hines, longtime Ashley centurion passed away peacefully early Sunday morning at Wintersong Village, just 26 days shy of celebrating her 102 birthday.

She was born in Cardington on October 12, 1910 to the late Tom and Flossie (Corwin) Laycox and was a lifelong area resident. Before retiring, Hazel worked as an office assistant with the former Sun Ray Stove Company.

A devoted member of the Stantontown Advent Christian Church, she was a life member of the Delaware Eagles Auxiliary, a member of the Ladies Home Mission, and Ashley Senior Citizens. Described as selfless, she enjoyed making others happy. She loved to dance in her younger years, especially square dance. She was always sharp as a tack, both in her dress and knowledge.

Hazel loved the change of the seasons and the colors of the fall seasons were her favorite. She enjoyed traveling and experiencing nature. In her flower gardens, was where she was the happiest and at her best. She treasured time spent there and spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.

She is survived by son Harley (Marquita) Hines of Ashley, daughter Jenny (Larry) Witt of Ashley, 8 grandchildren, a host of great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren, as well as her four legged kids: Jade and Peppy.

She was also preceded in death by her husband Karl in 1980, son Gerald in 1977, and daughter-in-law: Grace Hines, grandchildren: Kathy Logue, Kevin Hines, Tom Wallace, Sisters Jean Keith, Peggy Legg, and Brothers Jim and Tom Laycox.

Friends may call Tuesday 1:00 – 3:00 p.m. at the Bennett, Brown, Rodman, and Snyder Funeral Home in Ashley, where services will follow at 3:00 p.m. with Rev. Keith Daniels officiating. Burial will follow in Ashley Union Cemetery.
