George William ‘Bill’ Van Horn

George William “Bill” Van Horn, age 91, formerly of Mount Gilead, OH, and most recently of Churubusco, IN, passed away on Friday, January 12, 2018 at Parkview Whitley Hospital.

He was born on January 9, 1927 in Belmont County, Ohio. He was the only son of Albert and Lela (Neuhart) Van Horn. He spent his formative years on the family farm helping his dad farm.

Bill served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict.

He was married on August 26, 1948 to Alice Spearman in her parent’s home.

Bill worked in his early years as a Livestock Driver and also was a drainage contractor.  Later he worked as an Insurance Salesman before retiring from the Ohio Department of Transportation.

In his free time, he loved being outside with his draft Horses. He was a member of the Pulaskiville Community Bible Church and the Central Ohio Wagon Train Club. Bill had a servant’s heart and he enjoyed taking his draft horses and wagon around to area parades and fairs to give people rides in his covered wagon. He also served as the community Santa Claus for 50 years.

Bill is survived by his son, Rick (Kathryn) Van Horn of Churubusco, IN; a son-in-law, Jamie (Debbie) Taylor; six grandchildren, David (Kim) Van Horn, Nathan (Amanda) Van Horn, Kaly Van Horn, Anna Van Horn, Jamie (Misty) Taylor, Elizabeth Taylor; eight great grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife, Alice Van Horn; a daughter, LeeAnn Taylor; an infant son, David William Van Horn; two sisters, Bessie Shinaberry and Mary Underwood.

Calling will take place at Sheets & Childs Funeral Home on Monday, January 15, 2018 from 4:00 PM until 7:00 PM.  Calling also at the Snyder Funeral Home, Craven Chapel, 67 N Main St., Mount Gilead, OH, on Tuesday, January 16, 2017 from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm or one hour prior to the service on Wednesday.

Services  will begin at 11:00 AM, at Snyder Funeral Home Craven Chapel on Wednesday, January 17, 2018.

Burial with military honors provided by the V.F.W. Post 8054 and AmVets Post 87 will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery, Chesterville, Ohio.
