Francesco “Frank” Platania

January 13, 1930 ‒ July 09, 2017

Mansfield, Ohio

MANSFIELD: Francesco “Frank” Platania passed away Sunday evening, July 9, 2017, in his home surrounded by his family. He was 87.

He was born January 13, 1930, in Castiglione di Sicilia, Italy to parents Lorenzo & Anna (Stagnitti) Platania. At 16 years old Frank traveled to Catania to continue his ongoing apprenticeship as a tailor and by 18 was studying Fashion design under the famous Italian master designer, Rugero, in Turin, Italy. In 1952, Frank returned to Catania to open his own tailor shop which he operated until immigrating to the United States in 1965.

After moving to Mansfield Frank began working at Peter Berth, a men’s clothing store, as a tailor, and later began his own business on the side out of his home. Peter Berth closed in 1979 and Frank went on to work at Komito’s until its closing in 1987. He has since been working from his home serving his longtime customers when in need of a tailor. Frank wanted to thank the community of Mansfield for the love and support throughout the years and it will never be forgotten.

In his spare time, he took pleasure in hunting, yard work and gardening, and enjoyed traveling to Italy almost every other year with his wife for nearly 20 years. Also a devoted Catholic, Frank was a long time member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church since moving to the area.

He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years Maria Platania; son Lorenzo (Susan) Platania; daughter Anna (Phil) Walter; grandchildren Annamaria (Mike) Thompson, Alessandra Platania, Franco Platania, Sabra Walter, and Bella Walter; great-grandchildren Adriana Thompson, and Brody Thompson; sisters Tina Grasso of Sicily, Italy, and Nunziatina Alberici of Sydney, Australia; brother Vince Platania of Sydney, Australia; sister-in-law Matilde Russotti of Connecticut; brother-in-law Enzo (Maria Grazia) Bartolillo of Venice, Italy; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Frank was preceded in death by his sister Onorina Follari.

The Platania family will receive friends Thursday, July 13, 2017, from 4 to 7 p.m. in the Finefrock Chapel of the Marion Avenue Snyder Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial will be offered Friday, July 14 at 10 a.m. in St. Peter’s Catholic Church. Entombment will follow in Oak Grove Memorial Park Mausoleum.

Contributions in Frank’s memory to St. Peter’s Catholic Church may be made at the funeral home.

  • Time has passed and Frank has left a lasting memory in the hearts of myself and all of the Sorrenti family. Growing up in an Italian family meant you had to be bold and speak louder than the next guy. So naturally gatherings with family and friends usually ended up louder than fourth of July!
As a child I remember when Frank was in the room you knew it! His voice cascaded above most and always seemed to put a smile on my face. He was one of the big guys I always thought. Up there in the ranks of most admired. Sat at the big table kinda guy.
I’m thankful for guys like him…..never forgotten.

  • Lorenzo & Family, our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. We are sorry to hear about your loss.
