Florence Irene Phillips
March 16, 1916 ‒ March 19, 2009
Mount Gilead, Ohio
Florence Irene Phillips, age 93, of Mount Gilead passed away on Thursday March 19, 2009 at the Woodside Villiage Care Center.
She was a lifelong resident of Mount Gilead, where she was born on March 16, 1916, the daughter of the late Davis A. and Grace (Weaver) Phillips. She graduated from Mount Gilead High School in 1935.
Irene was employed as an assembler for 30 years at the North Electric Company in Galion. After her retirement she worked at the Essex Company in Lexington and the Lawson Store in Mount Gilead.
Active in her church, Irene had been a long time member of the First Presbyterian Church in Mount Gilead. There, she served as a deacon and also used her vocal talents to sing in the church choir. More recently she was a member of the Iberia Presbyterian Church. She was also a member of the Adams Grange, the American Legion Auxiliary T.P. Johnston Post #329, the Jenkins-Vaughn American Legion Auxiliary Post #97, and the Morrow County Historical Society.
One of her favorite pastimes was traveling around Ohio eating at different restaurants. She loved to tell people, in full detail, all about her meal and compare it to all of the other restaurants she had tried.
Showing great patriotism, Irene always supported her brothers who had gone off to war. She attended all of the parades and was very active in her American Legion Auxiliary posts.
A true buckeye, she closely followed the athletic teams of The Ohio State University.
Time spent with family was truly cherished by Irene. She loved to have picnics at the Mount Gilead State Park with her sisters and lady friends from North Electric. Her greatest comfort was found in the company of her family.
With a green thumb, Irene loved taking care of her houseplants.
Irene will be missed by her two brothers: Frank (Mary Jane) Phillips of Stillwater, Oklahoma, Harold Phillips of Mount Gilead; two sisters: Helen Cornell of Galion, Carol (Bill) Corfman of Sycamore; her sister-in-law: Dolly Phillips of Mount Gilead; and many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.
She was preceded in death by three brothers: Hubert, Ronald and Charles Phillips; two sisters: Virginia Phillips and Maxine McPeek; a sister- in law: Maxine Phillips; and a brother-in-law: Ralph Cornell.
