Shirley Ethel Hayes, 96 ½ of Sunbury, died Friday December 11, 2009 at the home of her daughter.
She was born June 28, 1913 in Monroe County to the late Mordecia Harvey and Louisa Bell (Gilmore) Warner. She attended Woodstock High School and Urbana Junior College.
Ethel was a member of the Sunbury United Methodist Church where she was designated a Kitchen Angel, a 50 year member of Porter Grange where she organized the Juvenile Grange, Columbia Chapter #33 OES, 4-H advisor of Thimble Wears 4-H Club, Tri-County Craft Club. She made many gallons of homemade ice cream for the church and community.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years: Eskham B. Hayes Sr. in 2003, five brothers, one sister and son-in-law Jack Stimmel.
Survived by three daughters and two sons-in-law: Mary Lou (Ken) Mackley, Maxine Stimmel, Shirley (Pat) McFadden and son Eskham (Jeanne) Hayes Jr. 14 grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren and extended family member who was an exchange student from Denmark: Gunver Penton Lodge of Lorain.
She will be remembered for her crocheting and knitting talents and her love of cardinals.
Friends may call Monday from 10-11:30 a.m. at the Sunbury United Methodist Church, 100 W. Cherry Street, Sunbury where a celebration of life will be held at 11:30 with Rev. Brian Smith Officiating.
