Dr. Felipe Fernandez

MANSFIELD: Dr. Felipe Fernandez passed away Friday, July 5, 2013 in MedCentral Mansfield Hospital. He was 83.
He was born in Guatemala City, Guatemala April 30, 1930 to parents Alvaro Nery and Mercedes (Gradiz) Fernandez.
After high school he was graduated from San Carlos University. In Guatemala City he taught anatomy at the School of American English and worked at the General Hospital there while earning his medical degree. He was the first doctor at Hermano Pedro Hospital and he founded a small children’s hospital in Guatemala. Dr. Fernandez served his residency at John Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, MD and continued his training at the Karl Menninger School of Psychiatry in Topeka, KS.
In Mansfield, Dr. Fernandez was a psychiatrist at MedCentral Health Systems, People’s Hospital, and Sturges Clinic on Marion Avenue for more than 24 years.
Nicole Christine Dumont became his wife on July 2, 1965 and they were happily married for 48 years.
In younger years Felipe was a marathon runner and throughout his life he was a dedicated swimmer. In spare time, he enjoyed traveling and collecting stamps. Dr. Fernandez truly enjoyed medicine and was an avid reader well into his retirement. He was also an accomplished carpenter who learned to work with wood at a very young age.
He was a fellow of the American Psychiatric Association and a member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Mansfield.
Dr. Fernandez was well loved and will be sadly missed by his friends, family and colleagues.
He is survived by his wife, Christine Fernandez of Mansfield; children from his first marriage: Aida Cain of Miami, FL, Lillian (Miguel Valderrama) Fernandez Roldan of Guatemala City, Rita Fernandez Roldan of Miami Beach, FL, and Brenda Fernandez of Miami Beach, FL; children from his second marriage: Nathalie Fernandez of Columbus, Marie (Jason) Blum of Dublin, and Dr. Diane Fernandez of San Diego, CA; nine grandchildren Michael and Jessica Becke, Harris and Ivana Silversmith, Isabella and Sophia Blum, Nicholas and Ava Bunce, and Miguelángel Valderrama; two siblings Alfredo Fernandez and Rosita Fernandez both of Guatemala City.
A Memorial Mass will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 9, 2013 at St. Peter’s Catholic Church, 54 South Mulberry Street in Mansfield. The Reverend Father Gregory Hite will officiate.
