Dortha M. Zimmerman, age 92 of Mansfield and N. Canton passed away November 15, 2016. Dortha was born in Morgan County, Ohio to Roy and Lena (Rouse) Bamfield on October 1, 1924.

After High School Dortha and her family moved to Canton, Ohio, where in 1943 on a blind date she met Kenneth. They were married in June 1944 and Kenneth, a US Marine, went to the South Pacific. Upon the war ending they moved to Columbus for Kenneth to complete college at OSU.

In 1948 the family moved to Lexington, Ohio and Kenneth started to teach. During the next several years they made many life time friends, including Sara and Virgil Bachelder, with whom they spent over 50 New Year Eve’s together.

In 1955 Dortha began college and finished her degree in 1964 at Malone College in Canton, Ohio. Upon moving back to Stark County in 1957 they taught in the Fairless and Lake School Districts, until retiring. Dortha and Kenneth traveled all over the world and had 57 years of marriage together.

Surviving Dortha is her son Lee (Cathy) Zimmerman of N. Canton; daughter Kaye Jackson of Mansfield, with whom Dortha lived for the past 6 years; grandsons Chad (Stacy) Jackson of Mansfield, Matt (Sarah) Zimmerman of Stow, Mark (Brittany) Zimmerman of N. Canton; three great grandchildren Emma, Elise, and Andrew.

She is preceded by her husband in 2001; her parents; her twin brother Donald; her sister Marie; and dear friends Sara and Virgil Bachelder.

The family would like to thank the great care takers that have helped to take care of Dortha, thank you to her dear friend in Canton Tammy, and most recently Sherrie, Alisha, Debbie, Tabby, Connie, and Theresa.

Friends may call Friday, November 18, 2016 from 4-7 p.m. at the Lexington Avenue Snyder Funeral Home, 2553 Lexington Avenue, Mansfield, Ohio, and from 1-2 p.m. on Saturday, November 19, 2016 in the Ragersville United Church, 8831 Crooked Run Rd SW, Sugarcreek, OH. A graveside service will follow in the Ragersville Cemetery; next to the Church at 2 p.m. Pastor Bruce Haltom will officiate.

  • To Kaye, Lee and your families, so sorry to learn of the passing of your mother. She was one of the kindest and thoughtful women I have ever known. Dortha touched many lives as a teacher and a friend. My family shared many times as a guest in the home of Dortha and Ken, my kids remember picking cherries, then having pie and ice cream
