Donald S. “Ted” Hayes
July 10, 1934 ‒ December 09, 2008
Mount Gilead, Ohio
Donald S. “Ted” Hayes, age 74, of Mount Gilead, died unexpectedly on Tuesday evening, December 9, 2008, at Grant Hospital following a brief illness, though he has battled other illnesses for several years.
On July 10, 1934, Don was born in Columbus, Ohio, the son of the late Mason and Bernice (Ballard) Hayes. When Don was young, his family moved to Morrow County where his mother owned and operated a restaurant in Marengo. Later, Don graduated from Mount Gilead High School in the Class of 1953.
Having met the love of his life when he was in 7th grade, Don married Wilma Van Sickle shortly after graduating from high school on October 3, 1954, at the Marengo United Methodist Church.
After working briefly at H.P.M. in Mount Gilead, Don was drafted into the U.S. Army, where he served as a combat engineer and bridge specialist.
Upon his honorable discharge from the Army, Don returned home and began working for General Motors in Mansfield in 1958. After working as a tool and die maker for thirty eight years, he retired from G.M. in 1996.
Always hard at work, Don and two of his friends at G.M. operated a construction company when production was down at the shop, which they ran for several years. Also, he was an Amway distributor for many years.
A woodworker, Don’s family kept him busy out in his shop with requests, and he would happily make anything they requested.
A man of deep faith, Don was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church, where he served as a trustee, sound man, and on the building committee. Also, he served as their “Mr. Fix It”, fixing anything in the church that needed attention. Also, his handy work can be seen with the wooden cross upstairs in the church.
With a love for his John Deere mower, Don kept his yard looking pristine all year long.
Don was a man of conviction, when he would dedicate himself to a cause he would always give it “100 percent, and it had to be done right!” He paid attention to every detail, and it was not often his opinion was not known.
Having an ornery streak, Don loved teasing his family and friends often embarrassing those he loved, especially his daughters-in-law.
He will be dearly missed by his wife, Wilma Hayes; five sons and daughters-in-law: Dan and Pam Hayes of Bellville, Michael and Kathy Hayes and their daughter, Kayla Ruth; Doug and Jodi Hayes of Mount Gilead, and their children, Nick, Jake, Ali and Ben Hayes; Glenn and Cindy Hayes of Mount Gilead, and their children, Dustin and Ryan Hayes; and Jeff and Cristy Hayes of Cincinnati, and their children, Anna and Molly Hayes; two brothers: Tom (Donna) Hayes, and Lance (Daris) Hudnell, both of Hot Springs, Arkansas; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Don was preceded in death by his step-father, Lester “Pop” Hudnell; and brother, Laird “Larry” Hayes.
The Hayes family will greet friends from 2 – 5 p.m. on Sunday, December 14, 2008, at the Snyder Funeral Home, Craven Chapel, 67 N. Main St., Mount Gilead. Funeral services celebrating his life will be held on Monday at 11:00 a.m. at the Trinity United Methodist Church, 75 E. High St., Mount Gilead, with Pastor Ron Heasley officiating.
For those wishing to make memorial contributions, they may be sent to the Trinity United Methodist Church, 75 E. High St., Mount Gilead, Ohio 43338.
