Donald P. “Dan” Conant, age 89 of Delaware formerly of Sunbury passed away early Monday, September 20, 2010 at Willow Brook Christian Village.

He was born in Fredericktown on February 3, 1921 to the late Charles and Chrystal (Moffet) Conant. He spent his young years in the Worthington Children’s Home. Dan was called to serve his beloved country in 1943. He was a proud member of the US Army, serving in the 26th infantry of the First Division, which he termed “The Red Fighting One”. Dan earned the Combat Infantryman Badge, participated in the Rhineland Campaign, was awarded the Purple Heart and was a POW during WW II.

On November 28, 1946, he married his wife of almost 64 years: Elizabeth “Bebe” (Knoderer). Together they raised their family and lived in Sunbury for 54 years until they moved to Delaware in 2000.

For 32 years Dan worked as a rural letter carrier for the Sunbury Post Office. He served the village of Sunbury as Mayor from 1988 until 1991, was a city councilman for 6 years and also served in the capacity of clerk/treasure.

He was a member of Sunbury United Methodist Church for over 50 years and was also a member of William St. United Methodist Church, a 50 year member and Past Master of Sparrow Lodge No. 400 F & AM, American Ex-Prisoners of War, Disabled American Veterans Assoc., and V.F.W. Post #8736. He also served as the president of Sunbury Little League Baseball for many years.

A man of honesty and integrity, he was loved by all. He enjoyed a good sense of humor and was never without a story or a few words of wisdom. A wonderful husband, father, and grandfather, he will be remembered for his warm smile and love of family.

He is survived by his wife: Elizabeth “Bebe”, daughter: Chrystal (Lee) Blanton of Worthington, son: Scott (Rebekah) Conant of Fort Mill, SC, Grandchildren: Cpt. Paul (Carrie)Blanton, Troy Blanton, Lt. Caleb (Lacey) Conant, Clifton (Katie) Conant, and Rene Bridge, extended family members and many cherished friends.

Dan was preceded in death by brothers: Harry, Harold, Russell, Sherman, Carl, Leonard, sister Naomi Maggard, step-brother: Winfield Conant, step-sisters: Cleo Patterson, Rae Raabe, Martha Radcliff, and Vera Wood.

A service celebrating the life of Dan Conant will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday in Terrace Room of Willow Brook Christian Village, 100 Willow Brook Way S., Delaware, OH 43015 with Larry Harris officiating. His family will greet friends following the services until 4:30 p.m. Private interment for his family with military honors provided by the honor guard of V.F.W.Post #8736 will be held in Sunbury Memorial Park. Arrangements have been entrusted to the DeVore-Snyder Funeral Home in Delaware.
