Donald G. “Don” Howard, age 29, sportscaster, of Lewis Center, died suddenly Thursday evening, March 20, 2008 at Riverside Hospital from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.
He was born in Columbus on February 2, 1979. He graduated from Olentangy High School in 1997, where he was freshman class president and participated in football and DECA. In 2007 he received a bachelor’s degree in journalism from The Ohio State University. While at Ohio State he interned in the sports departments of WSYX ABC 6/WTTE Fox 28 and WBNS 10TV. He also wrote for and was an editor for The Lantern and was a sports writer for U Weekly in Columbus. While in Columbus he covered The Ohio State University sports from football, basketball to rugby. He also covered high school sports, the Columbus Crew, and Blue Jackets, as well as various Columbus sports personalities.
He was currently working as a supervisor with Affinion in Westerville. But his proudest achievement was becoming a television sportscaster at WLIO in Lima, fulfilling his lifelong dream. He was a natural at sports casting and truly loved his vocation. In his own words “Thanks for watching and stay classy Lima”.
Don lived for sports and was an avid Buckeye, Miami Dolphins, and Blue Jackets fan. He treasured the Cincinnati Reds a fan of the ‘Big Red Machine” and Joe Oliver. With tickets in hand, this will be the first opening day game he has missed in 16 years. He was a master mason and member of Neoacacia Lodge No. 595 F&AM.
With an outgoing personality, he loved life and lived it to the fullest in his 29 years. Very talkative he expressed 30 minute answers to the questions of life and with his humorous side could have been a comedian. He enjoyed numerous friendships and lifelong relationships, treasuring a bond with his brothers.
He is survived by his mother, Mary (Rogers) DesCombes and step-father Gary of Dayton, his father Don Howard and step-mother Sheree of Lewis Center, brothers: Daniel and Collin Howard of Lewis Center, Paternal Grandparents Don and Emilene Howard of Bradenton, FL, Step-grandparents Mary and Norman DesCombes of Springfield, a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, and many, many friends.
Preceded in death by grandparents: Ralph and Lula Rogers, and JoAnn Howard.
Friends may call Tuesday 2-4 & 6-8 p.m., with Masonic services 8:00 p.m. at DeVore-Snyder Funeral Home, 75 W. William St. (SR 36), Delaware, where services will be held Wednesday 11:00 a.m. and burial will follow at Oak Grove Cemetery in Delaware.
