Darlene Yvonne Hawkins

September 23, 1943 ‒ November 11, 2019

Centerburg, Ohio

Darlene Yvonne Hawkins, 76, of Centerburg went to be with the Lord on November 11, 2019 at Bennington Glen Nursing and Rehabilitation Facility surrounded by her loving family. She was born to the late Cecil and Thelma (Luft) Hess on September 3,1943.  Darlene married her childhood sweetheart Larry the Barber 60 years ago.  They built a wonderful life together in Centerburg with their three children, Tami (Terry) Hook, Todd (Tammy) Hawkins and Kristian (Jenna) Hawkins.

In addition to her husband and children, Darlene is survived by siblings Michael Hess, Jerry Hess, Marla Harner, Carla Linkous, Donald Hess, and Cindee Hess,  grandchildren Jessica Donabauer-Hook, Jeremy Hook, Brandt Hawkins, Brynn May, Jarryd Hook, Bryee Guisinger, Bailey Sesma, Casey Byrnes, and Michael Johnson who lovingly called her “Nanny” and great-grandchildren Madeline, Lilliana, Asher, Brezlynn, Zyran, Aiden, Austin, and Lorenzo knew her as their precious Marme.

Darlene spent many years working for her family’s grocery store.  She eventually found her dream job at Morning View Care Centers, where she was Vice-President of Marketing.  Throughout her years at Morning View, Darlene traveled extensively as part of her job and especially loved visiting New Orleans.  During her travels she was also able to meet many famous people, from a boxing champion to the President of the United States.  She loved Christmas and volunteered to head up Jewell’s Kids, a local charity that provided gifts for needy children in the Centerburg area.  Her love of Christmas extended to holiday decorating.  She was known for putting a tree in every room of her house, for trimming hundreds of trees at Morning View, and even decorating trees that the company donated to theannual charitable auction known as “The Festival of the Trees”.

Anyone who knew Darlene knew how special she was within moments of meeting her. She had a unique gift for putting people at ease and was a friend to everyone she met.  People wanted to be around her just because she was so much fun.  She was the life of the party and had a knack for getting herself into situations that would leave people laughing and wondering what just happened. Darlene was truly loved and will be deeply missed.

A Celebration of Darlene’s Life, officiated by Minister Tony Shaver, will be held on November 21 at 4 P.M. at the Centerburg Church of Christ.  The family will receive visitors one hour prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, please donate to a needy child this Christmas in memory of Darlene.

  • I have many great memories of the years I spent working with Darlene at Morning View Care Centers. We were always laughing which made our jobs so much more fun and productive than they would be if laughter had not been a huge part of our times together. Darlene never knew a stranger and could talk to anyone as if she had always known them. My condolences go out to Darlene’s family.

  • Dear Larry, Tami, Todd, Kristian and families,

Darlene truly was an angel from Heaven. She was my second Mom, along with the many others she took under her wing. I have so many fond memories of her while growing up in “the Addition”…the cartwheel she did for us girls, the years of decorating the Christmas tree at our Church, shopping for hours one year to get the exact decorations Dar wanted, picking us up from school, just to mention a few. And, as Tami and I well know, she always held us accountable for our actions and taught us to we had to work for the things in life we wanted. Dar also set a great example for us about motherhood and marriage…she loved Larry more than life itself. Take comfort knowing she is in Heaven with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and you shall meet her again one day.

    Love, hugs & prayers,
Jennifer “Jeffiner” as Dar always called me

  • If you were a friend of Darlene’s, count yourself lucky. I do. We spent a lot of time together in our teenage years(I could write a book). Then as young married couples, we spent time together.
Mostly, I would take my baby daughter and walk down the street to Darlenes and we would spend a lot of the day together. At that time, she just had Tami💕loved Darlene dearly.

  • Larry, Mike, Jerry, and the whole Hawkins/Hess families: Susie and I express our deepest sympathies for your loss. Darlene was a classy lady and joy to all who knew her. She stood for things, the right things, and the service and caring she gave to those around her is an example to be grateful for in these trying times of conflict. We are truly sorry for your loss but envy the time, and great times, you had with Darlene. Centerburg is not the same without her but memories of her example and love will still light our ways. May she rest in peace. Chris and Susie Cordle
