Daniel William Avey
December 11, 1949 ‒ April 14, 2010
Daniel William Avey, age 60 of Delaware, died Wednesday April 14, 2010 at Grady Memorial Hospital after a prolonged illness.
Daniel was born December 11, 1949 to Richard and Caroline Avey. The second of five children, Daniel was born with Down’s syndrome and became the impetus and the first student for the whole range of MRDD programs in Delaware County. These programs were created to fill his needs as he grew and required different programs to continue his development. He was employed through the Alpha Industries and retired from that work program when he developed health problems.
Daniel enjoyed bowling and competed in the Special Olympics. He loved doing things for people and had a wicked sense of humor that could make anyone laugh. He enjoyed camping and would tell you in detail about his close encounter with a bear in Yellowstone National Park. He was a happy, loving person and had a life-long passion for the color brown.
He is survived by his mother, Caroline Avey, his brothers Aaron Avey, Ernest (Soni) Avey, his sisters Janene (Michael) Jackson and Cinda (William) Bauer, and best buddy and guardian Glen Tibbets. He is preceded in death by his father Richard Avey in 2008.
No viewing is planned. The graveside service will be private. Contributions in his memory may be made to Delaware Creative Housing, Inc., 437 Dunlap St., Delaware, OH 43015 or to the Delaware Arts Castle, 190 W. Winter St., Delaware, OH 43015.
