COLUMBUS: Daniel James Scurci, 86, of Columbus passed

away Monday, July 25, 2011 in Westminster Thurber

Health Center following a brief illness.

He was born June 1, 1925 in Jeannette,

Pennsylvania, to Luigi and Concetta (DiDonato) Scurci.

Dan graduated with honors from Jeannette High School,

and served honorably in the South Pacific during World

War II as a Technical Sergeant, U.S. Army Intelligence.

He graduated with a B.S. in Business Administration

from Duquesne University, Pittsburgh in 1949. Two

years later Dan met Angela Conte, who was in her senior

year at Duquesne. They were married in July of 1953.

Dan relocated his family from Pittsburgh to

Mansfield in 1969 after accepting a position as a

corporate tax manager with the Tappan Company. He

retired from White Consolidated Industries of Cleveland

in 1989 as Vice President of Pensions Benefits and Risk


In retirement, Dan enjoyed spending time with

his family, reading, gardening, playing tennis,

traveling, and playing bridge. Dan also took pleasure

in the arts and could often be found going to the

theater or listening to music; he was a contributor and

performer at Mansfield Town Roasts. Always committed

to his community, Dan was instrumental in task force

efforts to win voter approval of bond financing for the

ew Mansfield Senior High School.

He will be dearly missed by Angela, his loving

wife of 58 years; daughters Diane & Tom Freiheit of

Burlington, Vt. and Elaine & Bud MacLellan of Hudson,

Mass.; a son Mark & Judy Scurci of Bexley;

grandchildren Natalie Freiheit, Collin Freiheit, Annie

MacLellan, and Kathryn Scurci; a sister Elvira DeCaro

of Greensburg, Pa.; along with six nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Dan was preceded in

death by a daughter, Anita Caruso and siblings Anthony

Scurci, Jessie Decker, and Frances Strizzi.

Friends may call from 6-8 PM on Thursday, July

28, 2011 in the Finefrock Chapel of the Marion Avenue

Snyder Funeral Home (350 Marion Ave, Mansfield). A

Mass of Christian burial will be held at 11 AM Friday,

July 29, 2011, in St. Peter’s Catholic Church (104 West

First Street, Mansfield). The Rev. Father Gregory Hite

will officiate. Interment will follow in Mansfield

Cemetery where military honors will be performed by the

Richland County Joint Veteran’s Burial Detail.
