Clara B. Stroud

May 12, 1926 ‒ February 22, 2009

Westerville, Ohio

Clara B. Stroud, age 82, of Westerville, went to be with the Lord early Sunday morning, February 22, 2009, at the St. Ann’s Hospital.

She was born in Bolair, West Virginia, on May 12, 1926, and raised in Webster Springs, West Virginia, the daughter of the late Guy and Sina (Mathes) Mustoe.

At a young age, Clara began working in a glove factory, where she remained for several years until she married, Raymond Stroud on October 19, 1963. After her marriage, she enjoyed being a loving homemaker, first in Akron and later in Flint, Michigan, where Ray worked for General Motors. Upon his retirement, they lived in his hometown of Mesick, Michigan. Together they enjoyed traveling all over the United States, and most especially returning to see her family in Webster Springs, West Virginia. After nearly thirty nine years of marriage, he preceded her in death on February 25, 1992.

To be nearer to her family, Clara moved to Westerville, Ohio, in 1998, where she found a loving and accepting deaf community at the Columbus Colony Elderly Care Center. There she enjoyed attending the Liberty Baptist Church. She was very active within the center attending many small groups, signing in the choir, and participating in many recreational activities.

A “social butterfly,” once Clara knew she could trust her new friends she would “open up” and enjoy sharing her wonderful sense of humor and fun personality. She was truly delighted when her friends and family would learn new signs and have new ways to share with her. An excellent teacher, she also encouraged her family and friends to learn more about signing and the entire deaf community.

She will be missed by her son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Dennis & Yvonne Schultz of Mount Gilead; adopted daughter, Joy Stroud of Sulphur, Oklahoma; two granddaughters: Hadassah (and finance Daniel Lux) and Adina Schultz; three sisters: Jean Kriebel of Tampa, Florida, Ann Merceline Rosales of Detroit, Michigan, and Elanor Carpenter of Webster Springs, West Virginia; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Including her husband, Clara was preceded in death by three brothers: Edward, Bill, and Howard Mustoe; and three sisters: Glenna, Pauline, and Gladys.

Her family will greet friends from 10 – 11 a.m. on Friday, February 27, 2009, at the Snyder Funeral Home, Craven Chapel, 67 N. Main St., Mt. Gilead, where services celebrating her life will follow immediately at 11:00 a.m. with her son, Dr. Dennis Schultz officiating. Burial will follow in Bryn Zion Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Columbus Colony Elderly Care Center, 1150 Colony Drive, Westerville, Ohio 43081.
