Charles W. “Chuck” Chapman

November 23, 1916 ‒ November 27, 2010

Mount Gilead, Ohio

Charles W. “Chuck” Chapman, age 94, died Saturday afternoon, November 27, 2010 at Morrow Manor Nursing Center in Chesterville.

He was born on November 23, 1916 in Essex, Ohio the son of the late Blanchard L. and Martha J. (Chaney) Chapman.

Chuck was a graduate of Waldo High School in the class of 1935. After working a few years on the family farm Charles enlisted in the United States Army where he served in the Military Police Auxiliary #504 for 4 ½ years. His service included time spent in Germany and other locations overseas.

He was honorably discharged and returned to Morrow County where he worked alongside his father on the family farm. Initially they raised milk cows, but after buying the farm from his Dad, Chuck moved strictly to grain, pigs, and sheep.

Because Chuck had family in Essex he became acquainted with a young lady by the name of Genevieve Johnston of Richwood, which was a stone’s throw from there. As Genevieve put it, “Chuck wore the gravel off of the road to see me in Richwood”. On December 11, 1949 they were married at the United Methodist in Richwood. They enjoyed dinner trips to Marion 3 to 4 times a week, going to Gateway, Michael’s, Perkins, and Ryan’s, just to name a few and drives to Richwood to visit family and friends.

While Chuck’s love of farming never faded and he never officially retired, he did find it was time to moved on to the next phase of his life; that of a carpenter. In this new role he was able to build a new home for him and Genevieve, help remodel Oris’ home, and also build Carl and Esther’s home. Chuck was very skilled and his services were in great demand. He was extremely proud of his work as the main carpenter on the sanctuary renovation at Harmony Chapel United Methodist Church, where he was a member.

Chuck also enjoyed time spent outdoors fishing.

In addition to his wife of 60 years, Genevieve, he will be missed by his brothers Oris, Carl (Esther), and Robert (Betty) all of Mount Gilead; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his sister Ruthie Chapman and a sister-in-law Louise Chapman.

Friends may call on the family on Tuesday, November 30, 2010 from 4-7 PM at the Snyder Funeral Homes, Craven Chapel, 67 North Main Street, Mount Gilead. Pastor Jeannie Winters will conduct services there on Wednesday at 1:00 PM. Burial with full military honors conducted by the AmVets Post #87 and the V.F.W. Post #8054 will follow in Maple Grove Cemetery in Chesterville.
