Charles Robert Jackson, Sr., age 83 of Centerburg passed away peacefully at home, Sunday, December 12, 2004.
He was born on December 21, 1920 in Pleasantville, IN to the late Charles T. and Estella (Nash) Jackson. He graduated from Pleasantville High School in 1938 and enlisted in the US Army where he served in the Fifth Army under General George Patton of 3 years in North Africa and the European Theater. He was awarded a Purple Heart, Bronze and Silver Stars for meritorious service. Following his active duty in the Army, he moved to Centerburg, where he met and married his wife, Bettie Jean Satterfield in 1948.
He was a 31 year employee of Pittsburgh Plate Glass from which he retired in 1975. He was employed by Centerburg Schools as a bus driver for 11 years. He was a member of Pleasantville United Methodist Church, AmVets Post 59, Centerburg, former member of Centerburg Conservation Club, former commissioner of the Centerburg Little League and coach. He was known locally for his service to gardeners, homeowners, and government agencies for his agri-business services.
Survived by his wife, Bettie, of 56 years, children, daughter Judy Plowman, son, Charles R., Jr. (Laura), son Gene (Debra) and special nephew, Jerry Stewart, Grandchildren: Chad and Ryan (fiancé Stefanie) Plowman, Sarah, Emily, and Mallory Jackson, Kyle and Katie Jackson, numerous nieces and nephews.
Preceded in death by Brother Marion and Sister Esther Smith.
Friends may call Tuesday 2-4 & 6-8 p.m. at DeVore-Snyder Funeral Home, SR 3 at 61, Sunbury, where services will be held Wednesday 10:30 a.m., Evangelist Fred Albrecht officiating, interment with military honors will follow in Eastview Cemetery.
