Betty M. Reed Heimlich, age 83, of Mount Gilead, died on Monday afternoon, February 18, 2008, at the Morrow County Hospital following a three month battle with lung cancer.
On July 21, 1924, she was born in Galion, the daughter of the late Allen and Pearl (Lanum) Ireland. She graduated from Mount Gilead High School in the Class of 1942.
For over twenty years, Betty worked at North Electric as an assembler and later as a tester in the quality control department. Also, she worked for Neer Manufacturing in Lexington.
With a love of nature, Betty enjoyed tending to her flower and vegetable garden. With her family, she enjoyed camping and fishing in Ohio and as far as Canada.
An excellent cook, she often spoiled her family and friends with baked goods and she was known “to make the best pies in the world.”

An avid rock collector, Betty enjoyed the lapidary process of polishing and finishing stones to be used in jewelry and making crafts.
With a zest for life, she had a quick wit about her that could keep everyone laughing. Her true love was her family, whom she was very proud of.
In 1990, Betty married her loving husband of over seventeen years, John Heimlich, at the Mount Gilead Baptist Church where they are both members.
She will be dearly missed by her husband, John; three sons: Bill (Wilma) Reed of Mount Gilead, Dave Reed and John (Marsha) Reed, both of North Carolina; four grandchildren: Michael (Peggy) Reed, Pam (Nathan) Luft, Cheryl Ann Reed, and Jim (Diane) Reed; and three great-grandchildren: Emma & Ava Luft, and Danielle Reed.
In addition to her parents, Betty was preceded in death by her first husband, David E. Reed in 1971; daughter-in-law, Carol Ann Reed; two brothers: Salo and Donald Ireland; and two sisters: Lucille Glenn and Florence Campbell.
Her family will greet friends on Thursday from 4 – 7 p.m. at the Snyder Funeral Home, Craven Chapel, 67 N. Main St. Mt. Gilead, where funeral services will be held on Friday at 1:00 p.m. with Rev. Lawrence Combs and Rev. John Erkfitz officiating. Burial will follow in Rivercliff Cemtery.
