Betty Garee, age 84 of Sunbury went home to be with her Lord and Savior Tuesday, March 8, 2011 while surrounded by her family.
She was born on September 6, 1926 in Shadesville to the late Melvin and Thelma (Rawlins) Sherman. A graduate of Harlem High School in 1944, she was a lifelong area resident.
Betty married the joy of her life and husband of 50 years: Paul J. Garee on November 7, 1944, three days prior to his deployment with his US Marine Company to serve in the South Pacific during WW II. During the war years, she worked for Kilgore Manufacturing, assembling hand grenades.
In addition to being a devoted wife and mother, she spent the rest of her working years as a cook with EBCO Manufacturing in Columbus.
A devout and active member of New Bethel Christian Union Church, she served as an elder, Sunday school teacher, and many other capacities. A strong Christian woman, she wished to be remembered for her devotion and love of the Lord.
Known for her candy basket of goodies, enjoyed by youngsters and those young at heart, she was both quiet and humble, and enjoyed playing euchre.
She is survived by son: John M. (Gloria) Garee of Croton, Grandchildren: Brent (Kim), Brad (Debbie), Brett (Jeni), Brothers: Charles (Paula) Sherman of Sunbury, Harry (Ruth) Sherman of Washington, and a host of friends including guardian angels: Penny and Jon Dotson.
She was preceded in death by her husband: Paul in 1993, daughter: Paula in 2002, brothers: Lynn and Melvin.
Friends may call 6-8 p.m. Thursday at DeVore-Snyder Funeral Home, SR’s 3 at 61, Sunbury. Graveside services Friday 10:00 a.m. in Trenton Cemetery.
