Barbara R. James, age 74 of Croton, died early Saturday, September 8, 2007 at Bennington Glen Care Center in Marengo.

She was born on June 30, 1933 in Shade, Ohio to the late Raymond and Mabel (Frost) Taylor. A lifelong resident of Croton, she graduated from Hartford High School in 1949. In 1968, she earned a bachelor’s degree in education, Magna Cum Laude and was a Fulbright Scholar, top 100 Presidential Honor’s. She then earned a master’s degree in education also from The Ohio State University, where she was a Jennings Scholar.

Barbara was a lifelong educator. For 30 years she taught special education, as well as 2nd and 3rd grade for the Northridge School District at the Alexandria Elementary School.

Dedicated to the education of her students, her life was centered on family and teaching. She enjoyed gardening, was a member of the Croton United Methodist Church and an avid fan of The Ohio State University football and basketball teams.

Survived by her husband of almost 57 years: Frank “Butch” James, whom she married Oct. 22, 1950, Daughters: Melissa James of Norwalk, Rebecca James of Meadville, PA, Son Don (Teri) James of Centerburg, Grandchildren: Courtney (Tony) Shaver, Cameron James, and Brother Tom Taylor of Millersport.

She was preceded in death by Brothers Ralph and Steve Taylor.

Friends may call Tuesday 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. at the DeVore-Snyder Funeral Home, SR’s 3 at 61, Sunbury. Graveside services will be held Wednesday 10:00 a.m. at the Hartford Cemetery with her son Don James officiating.
