Barbara Jane Lennington

November 03, 1935 ‒ January 09, 2017

Mount Vernon, Ohio

Barbara Jane Lennington passed away Monday evening, January 9, 2017 in her Mount Vernon home surrounded by family. She was 81.

She was born November 3, 1935 to parents Gillis & Margaret “Marge” (Kelly) DeVinney in Blairsville, Pennsylvania.

On December 26, 1953, she married James Earl Lennington and they shared 40 wonderful years of marriage until he passed away in 1994. They are now together again.

Barb was an aide at New Hope in Mt. Vernon where she worked for over 20 years until retiring. She took excellent care of her daughter Tina both at work and at home. After she retired, Barb enjoyed dressing up as “Popcorn” the clown and brightening the lives of others.

Barb was an expert gardener. She planted lots of flowers along with a huge vegetable garden (and she enlisted her eight kids to help every morning and evening). She was also an excellent cook and she was famous for her homemade rolls but anything she made was delicious. A woman of many talents, she also sewed everything from Christmas stockings to clothes for her kids—and taught them to sew too!

In younger years, she enjoyed camping in West Salem and mushroom hunting near her home in Glenmont. Family meant everything to Barb and she loved getting everyone together to play card games like rummy and poker. She will be remembered as a strong woman who was never afraid to speak her mind and would do without to provide for her kids.

She was a member of Central Christian Church in Mt. Vernon.

Barb is survived by children (& spouses) James W. & KeKe Lennington of Big Prairie, Christina M. Lennington of Mt. Vernon, Peggy & John Irvine of Wellington, FL, Charlotte Staats of Mt. Vernon, Lillian & Dave Lawless of Mt. Vernon, Robert A. Lennington of Mt. Vernon, and Annita L. Crawford of Ashland; 13 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; two sisters and a brother-in-law Brenda & Ralph Snyder, and Sue Rinehart; and her toy fox terrier, Tootie.

In addition to her loving husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, a son Andrew E. Lennington, and two brothers Theodore DeVinney and Kenneth DeVinney.

Her family will receive friends 4-7 p.m. Monday, January 16, 2017 in the Bellville Snyder Funeral Home (81 Mill Rd) where a funeral service honoring her life will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday. Pastor Ken Springer will officiate and burial will follow in Bellville Cemetery.

Contributions in Barb’s memory to benefit her final expenses (please make checks payable to Snyder Funeral Homes) may be made at her services.

  • Dear Friends: I was so sorry to hear of your mother’s passing. She was a dear soul that I enjoyed working with at New Hope. Some of us “old timers” met in December and I learned about Barb’s illness. She was in my prayers since then. Hi Tina! Do you remember me? Your speech teacher. The only good thing we can say now is that Barb has complete relief and a release from all her cares. With love to all the family, Laurel Johnson

  • Barb was a sincere, trustworthy, compassionate, and understanding person and will be greatly missed. She was a pleasure to work and Earth has lost a wonderful person! Your
    family is our prayers.
